According to eye witnesses bomb disposal experts have made a controlled explosion of a suspect package in Lyric Square this afternoon at around 4 o'clock.

The area had been cordoned off and workers in nearby office buildings were told to remain where they are following a report of a briefcase being left in the area earlier this afternoon. Amongst those trapped was comedian Bill Bailey who used Twitter to keep his followers uptodate on what was happening.

According to unconfirmed reports there was no bomb. The police have given the all-clear and the Square is open to the public again.
