Play care charges up 156%

Fees will go from £11.50 to £29.50 from September.

Now that residents assimilated 13,4% Council tax increase and another 70% for parking permit fees, it is time to touch working parents' pockets and heavily. The Council Leader's Committee is about to approve a 156% increase for play services charges, from £11.50 to £29.50 per week. This would affect 80% of users, since concessionary fee won't suffer any increase. Concessionary users comprise about 20% of term time places.

Holiday fees will go from £30 to £83,50 per week, 64% increase, and holiday concessions will suffer an increase of 72% (from £12,50 to £21.50 per week). Concessionary users comprise about 30% of holiday care places. And there are more increases planned for 2006 ahead.

According to the recommendations that are going to be discussed by the Leader's Committee, without a change in fees the Council would need to close about 1/3 of the provision of play services by 2006. "We have made no fee increase (other than inflation) since 1998 despite increased salary and utilities costs, and quality improvements to OFSTED standards", the report justifies.

The committee is going to be discussing this Tuesday, 1st of July, the following increases:
