Work is underway transforming the premises at 206 – 208 Hammersmith Road, formerly home to pizza restaurant Villagio, to create a new seafood bar and restaurant called Faber.

The corner site, east of Hammersmith Broadway, has been taken over by a company called Yummy Pubs Ltd. However, the acquisition proved controversial as the site is next door to Sacred Heart High School, which raised a number of objections at a confrontational meeting of Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s Licensing Sub-Committee in May.

Lawyers representing the Catholic girls’ school said they were concerned about female students being catcalled and whistled at by customers drinking outside and were also worried that customers who had too much to drink could stumble and fall into oncoming traffic around the Broadway.

James Rankin, representing the school, said,“We do not say that these fears are fanciful. As you’ll recall the premises was once licensed as a restaurant known as Villaggio – and even though it was a restaurant, and even though everyone had to sit down, and even though everyone had to have a meal in order to consume intoxicating liquor, we still had problems.”

In response, lawyers representing Yummy Pubs said their client was “an accomplished and experienced and fit-and-proper applicant providing a premium offer with exceptional service” with a “strong history of compliance”.

Yummy Pub already runs two venues in Euston and Bow in London’s East End, which specialise in serving fresh oysters, mussels and sustainable British seafood.

Despite the objections, the licence was granted, with the new bar and restaurant allowed to open from 8am till 12.30am. However, it came with a number of conditions, including the installation of CCTV, a ruling that the serving of alcohol should only be part of a substantial food offer, restrictions on the hours of deliveries, collections and waste disposal and a clause saying that there should be no outside tables from Monday to Friday before 6pm during Sacred Heart High School’s term time.

Now work has begun refurbishing the premises to create Faber, which the company says will be a new kind of restaurant it hopes to expand into a chain over the next five years.

Yummy Pubs founder Anthony Pender says, “We’re very excited to announce that we have created a new British seafood restaurant concept as part of our Yummy Pub Collection.

“The character and composition of this property in Hammersmith makes it the perfect pilot site and we look forward to bringing the new restaurant to life.”
