A lacklustre Forum

I get emails bringing me up to date on Hammersmith news and events, but when I look at the Forum there is scant interest in it, unlike www.chiswickw4.com which has a lively and amusing Forum with anything up to a dozen hits a day.  I urge you to have a look and see how vibrant ours could be if people just started chatting.My particular gripe at the moment is the PAVEMENT CYCLIST.  I have written to the Police Commander to ask for some effort to stop it, and to practise some zero tolerance, but with no result at all.  Invariably they are the same youths who patrol the streets at dusk (without lights) to suss out cars.  I once had the audacity to look pointedly at a pair one day only to have them come over and threaten me.  Moments later a car around the corner was broken into by the same pair.  Perhaps if there is some reaction to this the police might take a note?

Chris - Hugh (70) and I (77) are of an era that finds current technology wondrous and endlessly fascinating, because we have taken the trouble to learn about it, unlike many of our contemporaries who throw their hands up when confronted by it.  We are from a period when direct dialling to New York was a revelation instead of waiting two hours for a free line, so why not let the oldies enjoy themselves a bit?  I edit my home camcorder movies, use Skype to talk free worldwide - Hugh enjoys animations, and so do I, so give some slack and tolerance to us in our dotage.

Bill, I have only started posting Animations about 8 weeks ago having learnt how on the Wandsworth web site.On the site its done for fun,Jim Lawes,Audrey Walton andPeter Wright,and a few others, Jim has taught me how to post pictures and animations whith a lot help from all the others.Try it some time we have all made mistakes and still do,by the way i am in my 70th year. The Hammersmith forum is the most recent forum and Chiswick W4 was the original forum, so it's hardly surprising that Hammersmith is behind Chiswick. Hammersmith seems to be developing faster than some other forums.

I think a comparison with the Chiswick site is unfair as there is probably not a site in the country that comes any where close to it in terms of activity at least as far as a local site is concerned. Perhaps a reason it is slower to get going is that Chiswick has more of a distinct identity whereas in Hammersmith people see themselves as being in Brook Green, Brackenbury, Ravenscourt Park etc.

Yes, it's a pity that the Hammersmith Today forum is so quiet compared to Chiswick W4. As I write, there are 2 people visiting the Hammersmith site, and there have been 7 messages posted today. This compares with 135 visiting the Chiswick site and 59 posts.Apparently over 5,000 people visited the Chiswick site on 10th October alone, largely due to a promotion to persuade existing members not taking the newsletter to sign up.I think the Hammersmith newsletter is an excellent service and that the Hammersmith site's content in general is of a very high standard.Perhaps this site should consider a similar promotion - any comments from the editor?

Hi, I agree, Hammersmith seems to be the most boring site out of all the West London sites.  This is my first posting on this site - I tend to use the others (I have lived in the other areas though)- although Hammersmith, theoretically, is now my closest geographically (I live about 1 mile north of the Hammersmith & Fulham border) & I was born in Hammersmith Hospital & had my 3 children there!Regarding the boys on bikes, Chiswick are having the same problem.  There is a long thread about this on their site.

I too had the courage to look at those guys some time ago and was very frightened by their violently aggressive reaction, it was only verbal but it did make me realise that I was in a very vunerable (spelling?) position.I do think that the police actually do know who they are but need to catch them in the act.

I nearly got mowed down by a cyclist on Hammersmith Bridge yesterday, cycling along the pavement.  I pointed out that there is a 'Cyclist Dismount' sign each end of the bridge but he looked at me as though I had come off the moon.  Yes, I do wish cyclists would stick to their designated paths and the road and leave the pavement to pedestrians.  Observe traffic lights too.  The other week a cyclist zoomed past stationery traffic at the pedestrian crossing on the Goldhawk Road and nearly knocked down a school boy.

Yes, it's odd how chatty the Chiswick site is, while this one languishes. I've never understood it - perhaps Hammersmithsonians have less time to spend at their PCs.As regards pavement cyclists, I'm sure you'll get a flurry of counter-arguments from cyclists who tell you it's too dangerous to cycle in the road.  My particular hate are the ones who try and beat you to the restrictors by the Dove, or ring their bell in your ear because you're not walking quickly enough (and who clearly are unable to read the 'CYCLISTS DISMOUNT' signs at either end of the passageway).I think the 'youths on bikes' are a separate issue - and I'm sure the police know who they are, but never seem to catch them 'at it'.
