The next prime minister?

So Ken Clarke is out of the race.  According to a couple of old duffers on the news (who happen to be in Ken's constituency), this is a great loss as he was "the people's" candidate that everyone wanted & would vote for, including Labour voters.  Sounds like a load of old tosh to me.So who's best out of the three left?...do you care?

But whom does New Labour NOT want?  I fancy Ken would have given Gordon a harder time at the despatch box, always assuming that Tony bows out.  There is now, essentially, too little separating the two parties for people to rack their brains over the "ishoos".  Are we better off now than we expected to be - Health - Pensions - Crime - Education - Security?  I think not, without getting too political about it as we will only end up slanging each other.

I hope it's not down to just you and me to debate them!"It was your posting "A lackluster Forum" that spurred me on to create some new topics.  I'm glad there have been some replies, so it proves there are people out there reading the forum.  I'm going away for half term, so you'll either have to debate with yourself or try to keep the momentum going!By the way, I agree with what you said about it being necessary to have an electable opposition.

Ken, for all his strengths, is the 'old brigade'.    A new younger and fresh face is needed to take the Tory's forward and attract younger voters as well as retaining the older ones.  I had rather hoped Liam Fox would be the person but felt, again, he was not the young image needed.  So now its the Battle of the Davids.  Which one though, will it be?

I do care in that, in any democracy, there needs to be a credible opposition to prevent the incumbent party feeling unfettered. While I admire a great deal of the policies that New Labour has introduced (particularly on the economic front), I would welcome a Conservative renaissance.I agree that Ken being a great loss is a load of old tosh. What they need is a new leader, untarnished by the association of what they stood for back when they were in power. No one really knew what Blair stood for when he became leader of the Labour Party - they liked his fresh image, and that is why Cameron will become the next Conservative leader, ousting Brown in the election after next.
