Halloween - time to ban it?

An elderly friend of mine answered the door bell - small child "Trick or treat" - "Sorry I am not able to deal with this" (he was sick) - few moments later loud thumping on door and bell ringing.  He went to the door (not a good idea)and met by two large 6ft males in full halloween gear, and a third man behind.  One shouted at him, "Trick or Treat!".  When he said he was not dealing with this he was met with, "Well, f*** you then and you can f****** take this."  He managed to close the door before a rain of eggs were hurled at it.What is so alarming is that I still cannot work out what anyone could have done in the circumstances.Did anyone else experience similar hassle?

Yes!I had eggs thrown at my windows a few years ago, but we hadn't even heard anyone ring the bell.  The noise was awful & of course, we didn't know what was happening at the time of the attack.My elderly grandmother has had eggs & flour thrown on her front door, which is a nightmare to get off.It seems to be an excuse for some to be 'legitimate' vandals for the night (or in some cases longer as we can get trick or treaters knocking up to a week in advance!).I object to being disturbed by trick or treaters, even if they're tinies with parents.  Also, I know it is a particularly stressful time of year for the elderly.I have young children & do not allow them to trick or treat. I do not agree with it.

Not this year, but had a group of roughly 13 year olds a couple of years back who popped the halloween balloons on the door and tore off the poster.  When I said that was not in the spirit of the event, but here are some sweets anyway (so they got their treat), after I closed the door we had eggs thrown.  It has made me wary ever since and after 6.30 (don't mind the tinies with parents) we turn off the lights at the front of the house.
