Are we friendly? Yes, we are, look at this site. Actually, I found coming from north Kensington that there was a real, neighbourly feel about living in Brackenbury. There's a good residents' association - ask me about membership, I'm the Membership Secretary - and other parts of Hammersmith are equally good although some areas are more troubled. The shopping, however, is barely adequate although it must depend on what you want. I find King St depressing although it does the basics. Chiswick is much more interesting. There are some good restaurants (in different price brackets), doctors are good, and it has a garden centre in Gingko. Transport from Hammersmith Broadway is first rate and not bad from Ravenscourt Park tube. The Council has changed hands and promised to cut tax although it remains to be seen what else they are cutting. Council tax was mind-blowingly high. Our local councillors are always responsive - I've found - and hard-working, and I'd certainly prefer this council to Hounslow.I have been told how the word Hammersmith came about but it's now escaped me. There's a lot of very interesting information in the H&F archives at the Lila Huset (Swedish for Little House, don't ask me why). Their archives are fascinating.
