mobile phone fraud

My wife received a text message purporting to come from a  friend, "Yes, but only if u give me your credit card no.  I've gone and forgotten it,along with your security number. expiry date and would you believe it, (name), your surname has gone right out of my mind, crazy I know, Merry Christmas".When she rang the police and gave them all the details they said that no crime had been committed unless she had given all the details (and presumably had her account cleared out) THEN they could do something about it.  Crazy or what!The police rang back later to say that they had rung back on the number to be told,"oh sorry - it was only a joke."So it seems that you have to risk losing (all) the money in your account before anyone will step in and deal with fraudsters.

I would have thought the police might have been interested to stop the fraud going any further, or at least to have traced the mobile SP (07800) and got the subscriber's name.  But they may well be in some other country and  I don't know how to find out who the 07800 SP is.  It's the usual story - we have our hands full and this is small beer.

I would have thought the police could have got the mobile number blocked, ok the chances are if it is a scam they will just get another phone but at least it would have shown that the police had been informed and were on to them.  And the police actually accepted somebody saying it was only a joke..........no need to ask who the joke was on if that is the case!
