Askew/Goldhawk Junction

Anyone know the reasoning behind the road works going on here at the moment?   They are widening the pavements (goodness knows why as the foot fall there is not heavy)so it goes to single file traffic as Askew Road meets Goldhawk, putting in a mini roundabout, widening the division between the north and southbound traffic on Askew and the result?   Jams.

Southbound Askew in the morning, last week was backed up over the Uxbridge Road junction and up Old Oak Common Road.  Ditto evening.Evening:  traffic solid from Askew Road going west along Bath Road to TGT.    And all approaches East to TGT.  Almost at a standstill Goldhawk from Bath Road junction to Chiswick High Road .... which was solid.It certainly is nearly gridlock at TGT.  Look at comments on the Chiswick Forum.

I'm sure that they do consider the disruption that will be caused, and it's a small price to pay if it reduces the number of accidents at that junction and makes it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross.There's a bunch of flowers at the side of the road which I presume signify a death at the spot.I live on Paddenswick Road and haven't noticed an increase in congestion since the work started; which roads are suffering from increased congestion ?There is increased congestion at the junciton of Turnham Green Terrace, but 'gridlock' seems a bit strong, IMHO.

And what with the dreadful jams stretching back from TGT to the Goldhawk, we are becoming gridlocked at certain parts of the day.  Evening rush hour is a complete nightmare.  I do wonder if those who sit in council offices responsible for OKing these works, realise the chaos they are going to cause.

I've found this scheme in the borough's Spending Plan for Transport for the current financial year.  It's in the list of Local Safety Schemes.  In a recent 3-year period there were 25 accidents to cyclists and motorcyclists at this junction and the adjacent one with Paddenswick Road.  The aim is to reduce this accident rate by about 40%.The work is described as "Redesign of existing 2 roundabout junctions, including increased deflection and improvedpedestrian crossing facilities."  (Increased deflection means forcing drivers to take a more curved path through the roundabouts, thus forcing reduced speeds and hence reduced accident risk.)  The work will also provide "improved pedestrian crossing facilities".The overall spending plan for transport is at http://tinyurl.com/39uuc4 and this scheme is in section 4 on page 95.

As the end of the council's tax year draws to a close, all excess monies in budget accounts have to be spent ( on anything!) so that in the new tax year, the council will receive a full grant from central office?  I have heard that many council workers who work for H&F do not actually live in the borough.  I wonder if this is especially the case for the plonker who instigated the works at seven stars?

It looks bonkers to me. I had hoped the jams were just caused by the works, but now as they slowly get rid of all the rubble, it looks like a classic exercise in 'improving' things by making them a good deal worse.
