Hammersmith Quiz !!

How about a quiz of say 20 questions about the area?Lets say anyone can ask a question..and hopefully we'll have some participants!So that the thread doesn't get too higgle-de-piggle-dee (!) it's best to make sure that you fill in the TOPIC bar appropriately!We did it on the Chiswick Forum a year of two back and it was fun.------------------------------------------------------------

I can't accept that on the grounds that (a) I only answered a couple, (b) I don't live in Hammersmith & Fulham*, and (c) I don't think my wife would accept one of those, er, "unusual" objects on our mantelpiece!Actually, I reckon Mark Loveday deserves the second prize.* I can claim, however, that my first ever job in London was in the borough, a summer holiday job at ICT in Fulham (Putney Bridge House then, Bridge House North later, one of the two 1960's blocks at the north end of Putney Bridge). And my first task in this introduction to the high-tech world of computers was ....... to mark out the car park so as to squeeze in an extra car or two!

I'm not aware of a Hammersmith band (though I am sure you'll put me right on that one, Jim), so will plump for a Fulham based one. Apart from the drummer, they seem to be all brass. So, Fulham Brass?

The problem in the British Grove area is that the Chiswick/Hammersmith boundary has historically run along the line of one of the streams of the Stamford Brook that flowed into the Thames, presumably formerly powering a mill at what is now Miller's Court. The stream is now culverted, and British Grove was built on top of it. So the properties on the west side of British Grove are in Chiswick (Hounslow); those on the east side are in Hammersmith (H&F). Similarly for British Grove South, south of the A4. But postcodes are a way of organising efficient deliveries, so historical boundaries are largely ignored. Hence all the properties in British Grove are in the same postcode district, W4.The borough and postcode boundaries are very clearly shown on Hammersmith & Fulham's website, I've discovered. Go tohttp://www.maps.lbhf.gov.uk/easymaps/welcome_to_easymaps.aspand in the form headed "Choose a map from the list provided", select "Create your own map", enter an H&F street name such as British Grove South, and click on Search Address. Then choose any property from the list provided and click on View Map. You'll get a form headed "Select Layers to Add to Map". Select "Postcodes" and click on "Launch Map".Hounslow has something similar but with much poorer functionality.

"Is it suggesting that Hammersmith Borough extends into part of Chiswick W4?"Streetmap shows the borough boundary as running along British Grove, with the W4/W6 boundary immediately to the east of there. I'm wondering whether the properties along the eastern side of British Grove are in W4 but in LBHF. Aren't some of them the backs of houses in St Peter's Square?I've also just looked up a random property at Miller's Court, the flats off Chiswick Mall near the borough boundary, and it has a postcode of W4 2PF, but is in Hammersmith & Fulham (Ravenscourt Park ward). Curiously the Local Education Authority is given as Hounslow!By the way, Jim, your previous post about the band should have been Question 30.

I'm a bit puzzled by that bottom left side corner of the Map...which comes from the Hammersmith Town Hall website.Is it suggesting that Hammersmith Borough extends into part of Chiswick W4? Somewhere near St Peter's Square or British Grove? Perhaps a visit needed!!

The answer is that two cricket clubs amalgamated in 1999...Old Latymerians and Old Meadonians (Chiswick).Old Lats have a home ground in Whitton and Old Meads played mainly in Chiswick House Grounds.Following the Latymer question..and that was really deep and interesting..I now understand where those four crosses come from!!

Ha ha ha ...a "an answer" from Caroline being kept under wraps!! Perhaps checking on Google is ok....but it's certainly in order to check other pages on this website. That's helps us to explore these extensive Community facilities..doesn't it?One tends to forget that there are many other parts to this Hammersmith website than just this Forum. So I clicked on CLUBS (not the three soccer clubs!)..and noticed that there were two ADULT orchestra's at least in the Borough. Their websites are interesting too..and one of them shows the programme for next year...including a lady violinist due to play the Brahms Concerto!Her name anyone? ..before Caroline sweeps the board!!

I hadn't realised that he was married at Chiswick too..at St Nicholas Church.There's also a block of flats in Fauconberg Road, W4 called Montgomery Court and it was only recently that the connection clicked!We certainly do learn on these Forums. Talking of the many top Schools in Hammersmith and yonder..their websites are a good read too..if you have the time. Yes ..again Caroline..you're far out in front now!! ;0)Field Marshall Lord Montgomery is the answer. He moved to Chiswick in his younger years from Ireland I believe, but attended School across the border in Hammersmith at St Pauls. So he was an Old Pauline in later years.A look at the St Paul's School website mentions a room there named after him. Then ,of course, there is a bronze statute of the great man (a Hammersmithonian) in Whitehall.

Must be my lucky week, Jim. But I do love Hammersmith and have lived in the borough (first in Fulham) for .... rather a long time. I walk a lot by the river so have got to know that area quite well. Its a fascinating part of London and I feel not really appreciated by enough people. But these days we have more interesting shops and definitely more eating places which suit many different tastes and pockets.

You must be leading Caroline..with all your correct answers.Your efforts help to keep W6 Forum on the move! Well people do seem to pop in to have a look waht's going on!It was back in the 1930's, according to the St Paul's website etc etc, that a series of railway steam engine (909's?) were named after famous public schools at that time. So, there was on called St Paul's School. No picture to hand! What great riches Hammersmith has with all it's great Schools.

That church is called "Holy Innocents" and is opposite the John Betts school. There is a very good book called Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush Past by Barbara Denney sadly she died a few years ago, I have bought all her local history books, also a few by other authors.

"'Hammersmith and Chiswick' station on the North & South Western Junction Railway ( Closed 1965 to all traffic, 1917 to passenger Traffic)"Quite right, Andrew. It was Hammersmith's first station when opened to passengers in 1858, despite being nearer to Chiswick village than the station called Chiswick! The name was originally just "Hammersmith". The route to the City (Fenchurch Street) was via South Acton and a tour of the North London suburbs.The station site is now occupied by Ravensmede Way.As you say, some of W6 is in Hounslow, as the postcode boundary (red line on this map) follows the track of the old railway north of the District Line, whereas the borough boundary is roughly along Goldhawk Road and Stamford Brook Road.

Hi RichardExcuse the late hour..I sleep in split-shifts at weekends sometimes!! No cause for alarm! A 4am till 9am shift coming up!!Yes Chiswick Ambulance Station is the answer. Odd that isn't it? Would they be called out to say Askey Road if needed..or do they stay in Chiswick mainly? There used to be a lot of messages on the Chiswick Forum about this place..mainly because the staff parked their carsin the Station's off-the-road covered forecourt...whilst the ambulances parked in the road outside...incurring parking fines..payable to Hammersmith Council!So, this question answered!

You got it.Latymer was childless, and gave most of his estate to endow a charity to clothe and educate 8 poor boys of Hammersmith in the one true faith. The medieval garb of doublets and stockings etc was supposed to be handed out twice a year and they had to wear Latymer's red cross on their shoulders. Latymer Upper school still hands out ties to new pupils to symbolise the clothing bit. As for 8 poor boys of Hammersmith being educated in the one true faith - it is of course now a massive fee-paying multi-faith school attacting girls and boys from across West London! The cross is also now blue for some reason, and we also have Godolphin ... Latymer's cross appears on the Hammersmith coat of arms. He's an integral part of our local history.Not an old boy, although my two sons are both there. Alumni include Hugh Grant, Mel Smith, Andrew Slaughter and other comic actors...

Well, Jim, it was an excellent guess. There was also a laundry by Ravenscourt Park. Just along side the tube line. It burned down, must be about 20 years ago if memory serves me right, and the new housing for our senior citizens was built on part of the site.

I believe it is to do with Latymer School...and Edward Latymerwho was a founder.Apparently he left money to finance the clothing and the education of EIGHT poor youngsters. They proudly wore the clothing you mentioned including the Latymer Cross (ah! that's on the Coat of Arms!)in red cloth on their left sleeve.Not sure about the 1st November date.Mark, are you an Old Latymerian?

I have found a small booklet in my Library called "The Instant Past" published by the local Libraries in 1984..and it says:""The Hospital was opened in 1905 for the sick poor of Hammersmith. The Board of the Guardians which built the hospital was criticised for spending so much money on "luxurious" accommodation for the poor..ornate light fittings etc etc. The hospital was nick-named the Paupers Palace and the Paupers Paradise.""

It was the site of West End Baptist Church and a parish hall - but I don't know whether there was something there in between the church being demolished and POSK being built.The church was reconstructed at the back of the site in Ranvenscourt Road as a green roofed space rocket thingy opposite the the station. The remains of people buried in the grounds were moved to a church elsewhere (there's a memorial at the front of the building).

Popped along to the Furvival Gardens tonight..what a glorious location..and it was quite busy with joggers, promenaders, and courting couples. The walkway to Hammersmith Bridge looked a popular gem. American,and German accents too..and who were those horrid beer drinkers occupying the "No dogs off leads" fenced off area..allowing their dogs to run around..and one of them to sound abuse off at me! Zero tolerance department need perhaps to be informed!Anyway I did enjoy the walk around there..and tolook for the tree (failed)...but find the BERLIN STREET LAMP and the PLAQUE!!Thanks for introducing me to Furnival Gardens again (after about a 30 year lapse!)
