Loss of Post Offices on Askew Road
I was in Mr. Patel’s early this morning, the Post Office at the north end of the Askew Road and only a short walk from home for me. I have been using it since 1977 and how convenient it is! We do a lot of mailing but I pay bills, buy stamps, get money, lotto tickets and papers. (I always chuckle when I read posts about the bad service at the main Post Offices because service is impeccable here and really no long waits.) In the queue were:2 80 – year - old ladies1 other pensioner1 disabled man1 mother with pram and baby2 local shopkeepersWe were all talking about the proposed closure and how we were all going to get to the nearest PO in future if this plan goes ahead. It’s all right for me I could drive I guess but what about the elderly, the frail, the disabled, the vulnerable and the mums with prams?I began to wonder if those in power who make these drastic decisions ever visit and/or spend time in areas where these Post Offices are earmarked for closure? Does it cross their mind what effect the loss of such a necessity will have on the local community? Do they care? Today's Telegraph carries an editorial about this entitled 'Kicking the Country.' How appropriate!I am now firmly of the opinion that instead of ‘ government of the people, by the people and for the people,’ we have ‘ government of the government, by the government and for the government!’
