The 1908 Olympics - exhibition at Fulham Palace

Last night residents of my street and I went to the local history archive in the Lilla Huset - can I mention again how good that place is? - and Jane Kimber and Anne Wheeldon gave us a fascinating talk on the history of our neighbourhood. They also gave us leaflets for an exhibition at the Museum of Fulham Palace from 19 July to 21 September, called 'The Great White City, The Franco-British Exhibition and the 1908 Olympics' which were held locally.  It looks good.  www.fulhampalace.org

Glad you liked it.  One thing that's making me chuckle when I listen to the Olympics coverage now - they keep saying Team GB has won the most medals for 100 years.  They don't mention - as the exhibition does - that we won that many in 1908 because all the officials were British as well!

I went to the Exhibition on Sunday and it really is fascinating.  And the restoration work at Fulham Palace, which was also open and free of charge too, was fascinating.

Perhaps a little trip down there on a Saturday or Sunday wold suit you better.  We went on Sunday and it wasn't crowded. Take a picnic unless you want to pay £2 for a small cup of coffee and more for lunch.  The beautiful terrace isn't a cafe, which is what you would imagine people would want, it's a restaurant, with main courses at around £12 ...  And the service was unhelpful ...

I'm pleased you ask ... because I happen to know.  According to the leaflet, it's open 19 July to 21 September, Saturday 11 am to 2pm, Sunday 11.30 to 3.30 pm, and Monday and Tuesday 12 pm to 4 pm.

Do you know what time this closes, would love to see the area how the area that I work in used to look but don't think it is something that could be done in a lunchtime.

We've been.  it was very interesting.  Some great pictures of how White City and Shepherd's Bush used to look at the beginning of the last century. Also here's what I didn't know before I went: the current marathon distance was fixed at these Olympics.  It's the distance from Windsor Castle to White City, taking in 2/3 of the way around the track to finish at the Royal Box.  Who knew?!
