Do Public Loos give you the blues????

In recent years the shortage of public loos seems to be on the increase and most of those still open are in such a horrible state that the option of going "crossed legged" springs to mind! For instance, the toilets in the Hammersmith Shopping Mall are an absolute disgrace. There are 4 toilets plus a disabled toilet, the latter has had a sign on the door stating that it is broken, that particular toilet has been "broken" for many months. As far as the other 4 toilets are concerned, for some weeks now only 2 of these are available, the others are "broken". This often results in a long queue cauing anger and fruistration to shoppers, especially those with children who are obviously desperate to use the facility.I have NEVER seen an attendant in the Shopping Mall toilets, although I have noted members of the public banging on the door where the attendant should be and getting no response.Of course there are public toilets in Hammersmith Station but one must pay 30p to use this facility. Why should we have to pay to use the facilities when they want to attract shoppers into the station complex? The only other option is for one to use the toilets in a coffee bar which of course means buying refreshments, rather defeating the purpose of the exercise!I think the people responsible for Shopping Malls really should be be doing all they can to attract potential customers to spend some time on their premises and when they want to "Spend a Penny" to ensure that they are not going to feel like throwing up at the very state of the public toilets. They should be ashamed of themselves for the way this facility is neglected.Acton High Street is not much better. The public toilets in "The Oaks" are often closed, and when they are open they are in such a state that one would have to be really desperate to actually use them. Paper scattered all over the floor, flooded sinks with bits of paper stopping the water going down, it's disgusting.Morrisons at least do try and keep their toilets in a reasonable condition but they do have to check on the situation every hour, even then it is sometimes in a mess! With the new Westfield Shopping Centre opening this week I think the people who are responsible for providing and maintaining public toilets in the surrounding areas had better review their situation because they will need to do all in their power to attract shopppers.Perhaps we should have a "Good Loo Guide" or tell those responsible to get off their backsides(!) and do something about it!Some of the best kept public toilets seem to be in Westminster, sorry but it's too far to go!!!

Gordon Brown should resign

Gordon Brown bears a very heavy responsibility for the present crisis because:1. He establshed the present tripartite regulatory system of the Financial Services Authority, the Treasury and the Bank of England which failed to prevent, detect or control the situation;2. He has presided since 1997 over a massive explosion of public and private debt;3. He sold a huge part of the nation's gold reserves when the gold price was low;4. He has raided and weakened our pension funds and other savings;5. He has greatly expanded governement expenditure thus encumbering us all and future generations with higher taxes and a massive national debt including the costs of the so-called public private partnerships;6. He failed to save money and add the the nation's reserves when the economy was doing well as a result of reforms made by the Conservative Governments of 1979- 1997;7. He has squandered billions of our money on the unreformed health, social security and educational systems without a proportionate immprovement in the performance of these systems;8. He has squandered billions on the war in Iraq and in so-called  aid to corrupt and authoritarian foreign governments;9. He has dithered consistently, chopped and changed economic policies, complicated the tax systems , increased the tax burdens on the poor and the working class and lost the confidence of the British people;10. He has failed dramtically to end poverty, esp[ecially child poverty, increased the income discrepancies between rich and poor and made millions more dependent on state benefits;11. He has consistently undermined public and investor confidence in British banks and financial institutions;12. By their actions, inactions and leaks, he and his colleagues have systematically devalued the capital values and assets of British banks thus forcing them to turn to the Government for assisdtance, funds and shareholders;13. He has failed to protect investors, borrowers and shareholders by failing to regulate and limitethe explosion of credit which has led to an explosion of property prices well beyond sustainable levels;14. He has presided over a huge wave of uncontrolled immigration which  has resulted on huge pressures on housing, education, health, social security and other services;15. He has allowed banks from outside the UK and the EU (e.g. Iceland and the USA) to take depositis from UK local government, charities and individuals without ensuring that these deposits are adequately protected;16. He has failed to ensurr that the Government's plans to deal with the crisis were announced properly in such a way not to allow speculators and traders take profits at the expense of shareholders, savers and depositors. 17.The Government has leaked like a sieve feeding market sensitive information to  to the media, particularly to Brown's biographer, Robert Peston of the BBC, in a way that has enabled speculators make billions, which has encouraged the flight of capital out of the UK and UK banks and other companies and which has lead to a collapse the the sahre values of British companies and hence in the value of our pension funds;18. He does not understand  global momey, share and commodity markets;19. He has no qualifications in economics or finance and has no private sector business experience;20. He lacks the confidence of the British people, the City of London and the global banking and financial communities;21. He has not been elected by the British people. Therefore he should resign as soon as his resignation will not lead to a deterioration of the present crisis he has been so much responsible for.

Teachings of Zen!

1. Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me for the path is narrow. In fact, just piss off and leave me alone.2. Sex is like air. It's not important unless you aren't getting any.3. No one is listening until you fart.4. Always remember you're unique. Just like everyone else.5. Never test the depth of the water with both feet.6. If you think nobody cares whether you're alive or dead, try missing a couple of mortgage payments.7. Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.8. If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.9. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.10. If you lend someone £20 and never see that person again, it was probably well worth it.11. If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.12. Some days you are the bug; some days you are the wind screen.13. Don't worry; it only seems kinky the first time.14. Good judgment comes from bad experience and most of that comes from bad judgment.15. A closed mouth gathers no foot. 16. There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither one works.17. Generally speaking, you aren't learning much when your lips are moving.18. Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.19. We are born naked, wet and hungry, and get slapped on our ass ... then things just get worse.20. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night. Handle every stressful situation like a dog, if you can't eat it or hump it. Piss on it and walk away.

Retendering of local bus services - have your say

TfL are currently consulting on the retendering of bus routes. Please bear in mind TfL’s advice on suggestions, comments, etc on routes:  They are looking for comments from the public to Stakeholders in this case London TravelWatch. They would particularly welcome information on any particular problems you may have identified rather than a specific suggestion for extension or enhancement of an individual route. This is because the best solution to a problem may be a change to another route rather than the one being directly reviewed. Closing date for comments put on the forum by 23rd September.  I will then take them forward to Tfl. Suggestions might include:                                                 ideas which enhance social inclusion;                        corridors or areas which might benefit from new or enhanced Sunday or night services;                        areas or corridors on which you feel increased frequency or larger vehicles are needed to  cater for demand;                         identifying routes which you feel are unreliable;                        ideas which improve integration with other transport modes or interchange with other bus  routes or improve access to major developments.”  The routes affected are: 207, N207, 427, 427, 607 195 266, N266 260 120 70, R70 94, N94 11, N11 195 X26 110, 111 81 211, C1

Winning answers to a competition for most embarrasing moments....................

4th PlaceWhile in line at the bank one afternoon, my toddler decided to release some pent-up energy and started to run amuck I was finally able to grab hold of her after receiving looks of disgust and annoyance from other patrons. I told her that if she didn't start behaving herself right now, she would be punished. To my horror, she looked me in the eye and said in a voice just asthreatening, 'if you don't let me go right now, I'll tell Grandma I saw you kissing Daddy's willy last night'.After this enlightening exchange, the silence was deafening.Even the tellers stopped what they were doing.I mustered the last of my dignity and walked out of the bank, with mydaughter in tow.The last thing I heard as the door shut behind me were screams oflaughter.3rd PlaceIt was the day before my 18th birthday. I was living at home, but myparents had gone out for the evening, so I invited my girlfriend overfor a romantic night alone. As we lay in bed after making love, we heard the telephone ringingdownstairs.I suggested to my girlfriend that I give her a piggy-back ride down to the phone. Since we didn't want to miss the call we didn't have time to get dressed. When we got to the bottom of the stairs, the lights suddenly came on as a whole crowd of people yelled 'SURPRISE'. My entire family - parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins as well as my friends, were standing there. My girlfriend and I were frozen on the spot in a state of shock and embarrassment for what seemed like an eternity.Since then, no one in my family has planned any surprise parties.2nd PlaceA lady picked up several items at a discount store. When she finally got to the checkout, she learned that one of the items had no price tag. The checkout girl got on the public address system, which boomed out across the store for everyone to hear, 'PRICE CHECK FOR TAMPAX SUPERSIZE'.But it got worse.Someone at the rear of the store apparently misunderstood the word'Tampax' for 'Thumbtacks', and replied in a business like tone, his voice booming over the same public address system:'Do you want the kind you push in with your thumb or the kind you belt in with a hammer?'1st PlaceAnd the winner is . . .This happened at a major Irish University , during a biology lecture. A professor was discussing the high glucose levels found in semen.A young woman raised her hand and asked, 'If I understand you correctly, you are saying there is as much glucose in male semen as in sugar?' The professor responded, 'yes, that's correct', adding some statistical data to his lecture. Raising her hand again, the girl asked, 'Then why doesn't it taste sweet?' After a stunned silence, the whole class burst out laughing. The poor girl turned bright red, and as she realised exactly what shehad inadvertently said, she picked up her books and without anotherword, walked out of the class. However, as she was heading for the door, the professor's reply was aclassic. Totally straight faced, he answered her question:"It doesn't taste sweet because the taste-buds for sweetness are on the tip of your tongue and not in the back of your throat".

Think you are having a bad day at the office....!

For those of you that are having a 'thank God it's Friday' day, something to make you smile!!!Rob is a commercial saturation Diver for Global Divers in Western Australia. He performs underwater repairs on offshore drilling rigs.Below is an E-mail he sent to his sister. She then sent it to a radio station in Perth, who was sponsoring a worst job experience contest. Needless to say, she won.Just another note from your bottom-dwelling brother. Last week I had a bad day at the office. I know you've been feeling down lately at work, so I thought I would share my dilemma with you to make you realise it's not so bad after all. Before I can tell you what happened to me, I first must bore you with a few technicalities of my job.As you know, my office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to the office. It's a wetsuit. This time of year the water is quite cool. So what we do to keep warm is this:We have a diesel powered industrial 'water heater'. This $20,000 piece of equipment sucks water out of the sea. It heats it to a delightful temperature. It then pumps it down to the diver through a hose, which is taped to the side of the suit. I've used it several times with no complaints. What I do, when I get to the bottom and start working, is take the hose and stuff it down the back of my wetsuit. This floods my whole suit with warm water. It's like working in a Jacuzzi.Everything was going well until all of a sudden, my **** started to itch. So, of course, I scratched it. This only made things worse. Within a few seconds my **** started to burn. I pulled the hose out  from my back, but the damage was already done. In agony, I realised what had happened. The machine had sucked up a jellyfish and pumped it into my suit. Now, since I don't have any hair on my back, the jellyfish couldn't stick to it. However, the crack of my **** was not as fortunate. When I scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually grinding the jellyfish into the crack of my ****.I informed the dive supervisor of my dilemma over the communicator. His instructions were unclear due to the fact that he, along with five other divers, were all in fits of hysterical laughter. I was then instructed to make three agonising in-water compression stops totalling thirty-five minutes before I could reach the surface to begin my chamber dry decompression. When I arrived at the surface, I was wearing nothing but my brass helmet. As I climbed out of the water, the Medic, with tears of laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream and told me to rub it on my **** as soon as I got into the chamber.Yes the cream put the fire out, but I couldn't poo for two days because my **** was swollen shut. So, next time you're having a bad day at work, think about how much worse it would be if you had a jellyfish shoved up your bum.Now repeat to yourself "I love my job, I love my job, I love my job".

I may get banned but it made me laugh!

A man went to his doctor and told him he was having a problem, as he was unable to get his manhood to stand to attention. The doctor checked him out then told him that the muscles around the base of The organ were damaged from a previous viral infection and there was nothing He could actually do for him. However, he knew of an experimental treatment That might work, if he was willing to take the risk. The treatment consisted Of planting muscle tissues from an elephant's trunk into his 'old fella'. The man thought about it for a while. The thought of having to go through Life without sex was too much for him to bear. So, with the assurance that There would be no cruelty to the elephant, the man decided to go for it. A few weeks after the operation, he was given the green light to go and try Out his newly renovated equipment. As a result he planned a romantic evening with his girlfriend and took her To one of the nicest restaurants in town. In the middle of dinner he felt a Strong stirring in his loins that continued to the point of being extremely Painful. To release the pressure he unzipped his fly and his wotsit sprang Out, slid across the top of the table, grabbed a bread roll and returned to His trousers. His girlfriend was stunned at first, but then with a sly grin on her face Said, 'That was incredible! Can you do that again?' With tears in his eyes he replied, 'I think I can, but I am not sure if Another bread roll will fit up my arse'.

Found - Burmese type cat, semi long hair...

I foster cats for Hounslow Animal Welfare Society and put the below post on the Chiswick Forum.  Someone has suggested that I also put it on this forum in case this cat belongs to someone closer to where he was found....I would not normally post a "found" relating to a cat I am fostering but I have one that arrived on Monday who HAS to have been someone's pet.  He has the colouring of a wolf - cream base fur, silver longer fur with black ticking.  He's about 2 years old, an already neutered male and was found in Hammersmith where he has been hanging out as a stray.  A lady was feeding him occassionally as she could see he was starving and then called HAWs to collect him as he is so friendly and loving he is definately not feral. He is very, very skinny under all his fur, has a slight skin condition (that is under control) caused probably by a flea allergy and is ravenously hungry.  He is desperate for love and attention, has the most beautiful green eyes and HUGE paws.He is possibly a breed called a Tiffanie which is a type of semi-long haired Burmese.  Loads of stuff about his face and body shout burmese and I feel sure he is a cat that got lost.  He's a bit traumatised and has to find somewhere dark and small to sleep if my lap is not on offer but he'll come out of that.If anyone has any information about who may have lost this cat please PM me or post on here.  HAWs have registered him as "found" with Cat's Protection but it would be a shame if he is adopted if there's a chance we could reunite him with loving owners. And if we don't find owners then of course anyone interested in adopting him, please contact HAWs on cats@haws-animals.org.uk, quoting "Lunar" which is what I have named him.

Little Shop of Horrors on Askew Road!!!!!

I am writing this as I am 'on hold' for the Environment dept. LBHF to report the following and now I have given up after 7 minutes. Here is the story:There is an empty shop on the corner of Askew Road and Becklow Road right opposite the florist and Adams Cafe and next door to the newsagent/post office. It has been empty for over 2 years. During that time it has become a home and breeding ground for pigeons and probably rats and mice. There is a pile of old junk and furniture literally covered with pigeon poop and feathers. The mail slot on the front pull down shutters is open and you can see right in. I wanted to take a picture but did not have my camera.Months ago I rang the council (took ages to get through to 'customer service adviser') about this as did the owners of the shop next door  (several times) and the environment officer said he would go around and see it.  Perhaps he did but nothing was done about it. Then I rang again about a month ago and someone in Environment who could not speak English very well and who seemed totally disinterested in the matter took a message and said they would pass it on to an officer.  Nothing had been done! Apparently the council cannot trace the owners or something. I took a look in this morning and it was worse then ever if it can be any worse. Correct me if I am wrong but is this not a health hazard? It beggars belief that a local authority can allow this to happen. Why cannot the council just seize the property and clear it out? I am sure if this shop was on Turnham Green Terrace or CHR it would have been dealt with long ago.

Supporter of Suicide Bombers Supports Livingstone

A leading apologist and supporter of terrorism and suicide bombing is among the leaders of a group trying to win votes for Livingstone.Azzam Tamimi, a supporter of the Hamas terrorist organisation, is a leading member of a group called Muslims 4 Ken which is actively supporting the Labour Party's campaign re-elect Livingstone. Tamimi, has previously praised suicide bombers and even said he would volunteer personally for a suicide mission in the Middle East. In a BBC interview in 2004 he said: "If I can go to Palestine and sacrifice myself I would do it. Why not? Sacrificing myself for Palestine is a noble cause. It is the straight way to pleasing my God and I would do it if I had the opportunity." It was Tamimi who invited the radical Islamic preacher Yusuf al-Qaradawi to speak at a conference in London in 2004. Al-Qaradawi, who has defended suicide bombers and the persecution of homosexuals, was welcomed to City Hall and embraced by Livingstone. Al-Qaradawi is  a senior member of the Muslim Brotherhood, the extremist organisation that supports terrorism and which was banned in Egypt in 1954. He was banned from visiting the USA in 1999 because of his support for terrorism. In spite or perhaps because of all that, he was enthusiastically embraced and welcomed by Livingstone. In 2006 Tamimi was the main speaker at a London conference backed by Livingstone held the day before the anniversary of the July 7 terror attacks. Do we really want a Mayor of London who is actively supported by people like Azzam Tamimi and Yusuf Al-Qaradawi? Do we want a Mayor of London who welcomes and embrace people who support suicide bombings against innocent people like the thousands of people who lost their lives in New York, Bali, Madrid and London?

H&F Crime Summit –this Saturday 8th March 2008

Have your say on crime and policing in H&F! The borough'’s second Crime Summit is being held at Hammersmith Town Hall on Saturday 8th March 2008 from 9am to 2.30pm. The day will start with some short presentations from senior Police officers, focussing on the latest crime trend and strategies to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour. However, the most important part of the day will be ward-based workshops. Each of the 16 wards in Hammersmith & Fulham will have a breakout group – where you will be able to meet with your local Police officers, neighbours, ward Councillors –and be able to raise any issue of concern about crime and anti-social behaviour, no matter how big or small, and have someone there who is able to say what can be done about it and over what timescale.Cracking down on crime and anti-social behaviour is the top priority of H&F Council. The Council is already doing a great deal such as the 24/7 neighbourhood beat policing pilots in Fulham Broadway and Shepherd's Bush Green, £75 littering fines, a borough-wide controlled drinking area, targeting the worst anti-social neighbours in the borough, expanding CCTV coverage and increasing the scope of in-house estate and street wardens. But they also need the help of local people to feed in intelligence and report where problems are occurring so that they can tackle issues as soon as they arise. The Crime Summit is the perfect opportunity to pass on that information. No need to register - just turn up! See you there.Edward NoelChair, H&F Neighbourhood Watch Association

Cctv Pods are out in force in Acton

Residents of South Acton are set to be offered more protection with extra police eyes on the streets.Five new CCTV camera pods have been installed on the South Acton Estate in an effort to reduce crime in the area. Each pod has four cameras and will be used to observe areas that have historically suffered from criminal activity and anti social behaviour. This is a new concept created by Community CCTV and each pod has the ability to save digital footage for 30 days, they see in the dark and do not need to be monitored from a control room as the local Police can log on to the system from a laptop computer.Graeme Perkins, creator of the Community CCTV concept, has been working closely with Sergeant Danny Williams, from the South Acton Safer Neighbourhood Team. The pods are part of a partnership between Community CCTV, the police, and government bodies. The introduction of the CCTV pods is part of a package of long term measures to reduce crime, disorder and anti social behaviour on the South Acton Estate. CCTV has a proven track record in crime reduction and combined with local Safer Neighbourhood Teams will provide a highly visible deterrent to those who are thinking about committing crime or causing antisocial behaviour in or around the area.Sergeant Williams goes on to comment 'with the support of our partners our aim is to introduce a package of measures that will substantially improve the quality of life for all law abiding residents of the South Acton Estate. The introduction of CCTV is a key part of this process'.A link to Photos belowhttp://s54.photobucket.com/albums/g90/chuckaduckpics/Ealing%20press/And for more info on community cctv at www.communitycctv.com

How did we ever survive.............

1940's, 50's, 60's and 70's  First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, and didn't get tested for diabetes.  Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.  We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking .  As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.  Riding in the back of a van - loose - was always great fun.  We drank water from the garden hosepipe and NOT from a bottle.  We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.  We ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......  WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!  We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.  No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.  We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem .  We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no text messaging, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents .. We played with worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.  Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out any eyes.We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!  Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!  The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

Heathrow expansion

On Tuesday night, there was a meeting to talk about the Heathrow expansion programme at St Michaels and All Angels in Chiswick. It was supposed to have taken place upstairs, but there were so many people that they had to move it to the actual church. We are also given the chance to make our voices heard on Tuesday 12th February 7.00 at Hammersmith Town Hall. The expansion programme will affect us all. Please support the opposition by attending the meeting in Hammersmith and by signing the petition at http://www.stopheathrowexpansion.com/. You can also ask the Department for Transport (on 0845 600 4170) to have their consultation paper/questionnaire (which was of course not sent to anyone affected) sent to you, fill it in and send it back. All the representatives at the meeting in Chiswick recommended that you do not answer any of their questions, as they have been phrased in a way that does not allow you to say that you oppose it. Instead, go directly to the end where there is a section for additional comments, and just write that you oppose any expansion of Heathrow airport. The Stop Heathrow Expansion website is very informative and the text below has been taken from this site describing the impact the proposals will have on us.-FROM THE WEBSITE-A big increase in planes for everybody in London and the Home CountiesThe sheer scale of the proposals means that few areas of London and the Home counties will be unaffected. There will be more planes landing; more planes taking off; and, if a third runway is built, whole neighbourhoods under the landing or take-off flight path for the first time.800,000 flights using Heathrow each yearIf the Government’s proposals go ahead, the number of flights using the airport will nearly double. Former Aviation Minister Gillian Merron told Parliament earlier this year that flight numbers could reach 800,000 if a third runway goes ahead and runway alternation on the existing runways is abolished. That’s up from 473,000 last year. . In the consultation document is saying that flight numbers would only reach just over 700,000 as runway alternation on the existing runways would be restored once a third runway became operational. But, give the history of broken promises, many people are sceptical that this will happen. A third runwayA third runway would be built between the A4 and M4, north of the existing airport. It would require the demolition of over 750 houses, including the entire village of Sipson. More than 3,000 people would lose their homes. Schools, pubs and churches would all be demolished.A new runway = new flight pathsAstonishingly the Government has still not made it clear where new flight paths will be, claiming it is only in a position to show ‘indicative’ routes. But, because planes need to be lined with the runway at least 6-8 miles from touchdown, it is clear that the new landing flight path will be over Holland Park and High St Kensington, the northern parts of Earls Court, Hammersmith and Chiswick before planes sweep in over Heston. To the west, the flight path is likely to be over Maidenhead and Slough. There will be new flights paths over Harrow, Northolt and Paddington. Also a lot more take-offs over North London.Expect a plane every 90 seconds on the new flight path throughout the day but, we are told, no night flights.Loss of Runway Alternation: West London’s half day’s peace and quietAt present planes landing over West London switch runways at 3pm in order to give people in West London a half day’s peace and quiet. The Government is proposing to stop this. It claims that, initially at least, it will only use both runways during busy times of the day. But the strong suspicion is that, once the principle is accepted, the number of planes will gradually be ratcheted up.More trafficThe Government and BAA make claims that the percentage of people travelling by public transport to the airport will increase. That may be true but misses the point. The actual number of cars and taxis using the airport will increase significantly if aircraft numbers rise to 800,000 a year.More noiseThe Government says that the planned expansion will not mean an increase in noise levels! That defies commonsense! It tries to justify its claim with technical jargon, saying that the ‘noise contour’ it measures will not increase. What the Government doesn’t say is that this ‘noise contour’ only covers people living close to the airport!More pollutionThe Government claims that its studies show that, even if these expansion proposals go ahead, pollution levels will stay within the EU legal limits. In many places they already exceed those limits. How does the Government square this circle? By making what can only be called ‘over-optimistic’ assumptions about the introduction of cleaner aircraft and by claiming it will be able to control pollution from cars and lorries around Heathrow.Climate ChangeAviation already accounts for 13% of all climate change emissions in the UK. At the current rate of growth aviation emissions will wipe out all savings from other sources of climate change in the UK over the next 20 years. The Government says climate change is one of its biggest challenges. Its answer is to propose the biggest-ever expansion at Heathrow. Will it affect night flights? The Government says that there are no proposals to increase the number of night flights but commonsense suggests that, with an almost doubling of the number of aircraft using the airport, the pressure to bring in more flights at night will increase.

Closure of Shepherd's Bush Tube Station

You might not know that the Central line Station is closing for 8 months from February next year.  This has only just been sprung on us commuters by TfL (I live in Acton, but have always used Shepherd's Bush, via the 207, actually my easiest station to get to). There are so many reasons not to close the station.  Please read my letter to TfL(and the Mayor and Peter Hendy)below for my views.  If you agree, please write to them too, plus the local press and politicians. Thanks,SeanDear TfL/Mayor/Commissioner, I am outraged at the plan to close Shepherd’s Bush Central Line Station from February for 8 months (or more probably, especially as no specific reopening date has been given). There are many questioned to be answered on this matter by you.  Most importantly, are the actions of TfL inspired by the interests of the travelling and wider public, or by pressure from the shopping centre developer?  I am sure that the new development will be a great benefit to the economy of West London, but to penalise local people, businesses and commuters in order to expedite access to a shopping centre is unacceptable (and have we any assurances that the shopping centre will open on time anyway?).    Closing the station for such a long period will inconvenience millions of passengers; it will also affect the livelihoods of the small independent businesses nearby, and could even force the departure of larger players such as the cinema and other big stores.  Will this inevitable damage to the economy of Shepherd’s Bush be reversed the moment the station re open?  Clearly no, by then, if a cinema is closed, it is closed, and it would take a hell of an effort to restore such amenities (which might be beneficial for the new shopping centre, providing profitable alternatives, moving the centre of gravity to their premises out of the Uxbridge Road).I am also disappointed that TfL has sprung this news on passengers so near to the closure date, no doubt a fait accompli which any amount of public outcry cannot change (and the contracts have been signed presumably?).  And you haven’t yet even spelt out what the alternatives for passengers will be.I suggest that you think again about the totally closure of the station.  Escalators can be replaced one by one, as is done at most other stations (including those with only two escalators and one fixed stairway between them, as at Shepherd’s Bush), and surely it is not beyond the wit of your civil engineers and architects top design a building plan that retains the shell of the current station, ensuring minimal closures for the general public. If you do go ahead of this egregious closure, you must supply alternatives beyond a pathetic shuttle bus.  Bus routes must be extended to Notting Hill, Holland Park and White City where possible.  Buses such as the 70 and 266 (from my point of view in Acton, as a daily 207-Central Line commuter) must be massively augmented to cope with the displacement of passengers using the 207 (for example) to get to the station (and frankly both those routes, particularly the 266 need a general upgrade, the reliability and frequencies on weekends can be shocking, and crowding is endemic)I call on local community, business and political organisations, as well as individuals, the local authority and the press to join with me in calling for a rethink, and certainly for the best possible alternatives for the travelling public if the closure must go ahead.  Mayor Livingston and Transport Commissioner Peter Hendy should put the public first and put a halt to this unnecessary closure, we don’t need a new Central Line station; we do need to be able to get to work and home everyday.  I am sure that the vast majority of passengers would be happy with escalator works and the station resembling a building site for a year or more, even if that means forgoing a fancy new station (and I cant believe that the new overground station can’t be built without closing the Central line). The interests of the taxpayers, fare payers and the local community should be TfL’s first priority, and the closure of a major tube station for such a long time is most certainly against these interest.Yours sincerely,Sean Rillo RaczkaActon, W3Cc: local press, local political representatives; chamber of commerce; transport groups

Channel 4 documentary searching for local case studies

I am an Assistant Producer working for betty, an independent TV production company that specialises in people-based documentary films and series’. We are currently making a three part documentary series for Channel 4 about the working relationship between builders and their clients and are looking for people who might be interested in getting involved with the filming process. We are looking for homeowners & builders in the Greater London area who have run into problems on a large scale domestic building project and need some help to get it back on track. We will offer the services (for free) of a leading industry expert to work with the homeowners and the builders to help resolve any problems.  The programme is a great opportunity to reach an amicable solution that gets everything running smoothly again for all concerned. The first two episodes reached an agreeable solution for both parties and I am confident that we can do the same for those involved in our final episode. My initial aim is to have an informal chat with the homeowners to determine whether or not the project meets the criteria of the documentary and I will then work on contacting the builder to explain the premise of the series.  Again we have managed to achieve this with our first two episodes and barring disaster we should be able to make it work the third time around.  The filming period is likely to last 2-3 weeks with our industry expert, Jeff Howell, spending 2 days each week at the building location.  Please do get in touch for an informal chat should the above apply to you or alternatively please pass on my contact details to anyone currently experiencing difficulties.  Best wishesFiona Wilson0207 907 0869 / fiona.wilson@betty.co.uk

Free Breakfast

For most of us who work in small businesses, finding new customers is a continuing struggle. There’s direct mail, advertising, our own websites, directory entries. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. And yet we tend to ignore something that most of us have heard, more than once: “The best publicity is word of mouth” That’s what the free breakfast is about. I’m part of a local business group that meets weekly, over breakfast. Well over half of my new business comes through ‘word of mouth’ referrals from members of that group. And as a group, we’re always keen to meet other business people in the area. That’s why we’d like to offer to buy you breakfast. By meeting other people, we get the chance to tell them what we do. More importantly, from your point of view, you can tell us what you do. There’s a good chance we’ll know people who can benefit from your services. And you might know people that could become our customers. We think of our networking group as a proactive, structures way to generate word of mouth publicity, and new business. And it works, for us. Would it work for you? The one sure way to find out is to come and have breakfast. We meet every Wednesday morning, at 7.00 am (we’re finished by 8.30) at the Plough and Harrow, 121 King Street, Hammersmith. You’re welcome to come along on any Wednesday morning, but we’d particularly like to meet you early in December. Just email alyson@thesnippet.net to book your place.

Plans for the town hall now open to the public

I went along to the town hall yesterday to see the proposed plans for the town hall redevelopment. Three companies presented their plans and I understand that the winner will be announced in March next year (more details here: http://www.hammersmithtoday.co.uk/default.asp?section=info&page=concouncil21.htm). There was mention of public consultation through surveys etc but I wonder if the public will be involved in the final decision process. Does anyone know?I can't remember the names of the three companies with the plans, but they are listed as Scheme A, B and C. My own preference is for Scheme B as it was the only proposal to link King Street to the river, with changes to Furnival Gardens to reduce the noise levels from the A4. This company proposed the road at the side of the cinema to be the walkway with a gradual incline starting from King Street and being of bridge height by the time you reach the A4 and then a gradual decline to Furnival Gardens. The plans for Furnival Gardens include terraced/tiered landscaping. Both Schemes A and C keep the subway system.Scheme C was Tesco's developers. As they own the land the cinema is on, this seems to be a conflict of interest and makes me think that the whole exercise is fruitless and that Tesco will win the competition. Does anyone know more on this? Needless to say, this design includes plans for yet another Tesco which will make 4 within walking distance of King Street. Scheme A didn't include any retail names but it did include a building in the front of the Town Hall which I didn't like as the plaza will not be fully open as Lyric Square currently is. I like the idea of an open plaza viewable from King Street as it will attract more visitors to the area. Scheme B proposals showed Waitrose in place of Tesco and on the other side of the plaza (where the careers centre is), they showed Carluccio. I understand from the developers that they have shown the plans to both Waitrose and Carluccio and both have expressed an interest, should they win.I haven't really put any thought into the facade to the new buildings as design is subjective and they all look OK to me. I prefer Scheme B for the following reason:- It is the only plan that recognises the importance of the river and Furnival Gardens to the redevelopment project- It is the only plan that offers an overground walkway over the A4- It recognises the importance of bringing in the right retail outlets to enhance the area. To my mind, a new Tesco has never attracted high profile outlets but I honestly feel that retailers like Waitrose and Carluccio will attract more quality shops to this end of King Street and bring a much needed boost to the Hammersmith shopping experience.I would love to know how others feel about the designs so do go along to the Town Hall and post your views here. If any of the councillors are reading this, I am keen to know what influence Tesco has on the final decision given that they own the land and also how the public will be involved going forwards.Sharon

Cycling on the pavement - new legislation

I was delighted to read the following news story on this site:-----------------------------------------------------------------------------"Councils push forward plans to allow parking attendants to issue tickets"Councils are currently "pushing hard" for the power to stop and issue on-the-spot fines for cyclists who ride on the pavement. According to a report in the Standard, parking attendants could hand out £100 fines to cyclists who are caught riding on pavements. There is already legislation in place which has lead to over 5,000 cyclist receiving on-the-spot fines however, critics claim that the £30 fine is not enough of a disincentive. The London Local Authorities and Transport for London Bill, which will be presented to Parliament next month, states "It is considered that this [£30 fine] is not a serious enough deterrent or punishment in the more serious cases, particularly where the footway is heavily used by pedestrians."A new law is now being considered which would allow each London authority to set their amount for the fine and to allow parking attendants to be the enforcers. The Bill states "It is proposed that powers be given to traffic authorities to set fixed penalties for the offence of cycling on the footway in areas where local authority employees have powers under a community safety accreditation scheme to hand out fixed penalty notices. Different levels could be set for different areas to reflect the seriousness of the offence."----------------------------------------------------------------------------I have been arguing for years that everything should be done to encourage responsible cycling, and, conversely, that every effort should be made to stamp out bad cycling practice. It sounds like the Government is finally taking this issue seriously. I hope the borough's MPs will support this bill.

If any of you live in a Zone A area and received the Parking Consultation leaflet today, I would welcome your views.During the last consultation back in 1998, I remember feeling that the way the questions were put to us could only result in the council getting the answer it wants rather than really getting our views. This time, there is at least the space to make open comments bit I still feel that the questions are somewhat skewed. The council is proposing to increase the hourly pay and display tariff to £2.40 but if residents purchase a SMART Visitor Permit (similar to an Oyster Card which charges against your credit/debit card), they get a discounted rate of £1.50. The hourly rate is currently £1.60 which my visitor funds, and the control hours are Mon-Sat 8.30-6.30.Under the proposed scheme, the SMART permit rate is only 10p cheaper per hour than the current hourly rate. However the likelihood of me getting this back from my visitors is nil as a) I would be too embarrassed to ask and b) they may not have the right money. As a SMART permit holder, it would be my responsibility to phone to activate the card and then to remember to phone again when my visitor leaves otherwise I could be charged more than necessary. Given this, I would therefore not purchase a SMART card but if the scheme goes ahead (as is likely to given the way the questions were asked), the hourly tariff for visitors will increase by 80p.How do others view this consultation?

Council 'only tows away more expensive cars'?

Interesting item from the Evening Standard web site. Good on the Council I say.***********Council 'only tows away more expensive cars'A council has been accused of towing away expensive cars that are illegally parked while allowing the drivers of old and battered vehicles to escape with just a ticket. Two company directors claim Hammersmith & Fulham is running a two-tier system after their vehicles were ticketed within eight minutes of each other in the same street.A Range Rover belonging to Matthew Steeples was towed away, forcing him to pay £150 to retrieve it on top of the £50 fixed penalty fine. But his friend Ed Rigg was only given a parking ticket for his ageing Vauxhall Astra delivery van.Ed rigg with his unwanted Vauxhall Astra and Matthew Steeples with his Range Rover, which was towed awayMr Steeples said that a parking enforcement officer at the council's pound told him: "We always take the more expensive car as we know they'll pay up."People with old vehicles aren't worth bothering about as they won't pay to get them back."Mr Steeples, 26, who runs a drinks firm, said: "The man on duty at the pound was quite open about it when I asked why my car had been towed but not Ed's van."He was being serious. They do not want to have to crush the cars that go unclaimed. I think it is disgraceful because it is double standards and discriminates against anyone with a nice car."They should either have removed both our cars or given us each a £50 ticket."Everyone knows the people who work in this industry can be pretty obnoxious anyway but this really did add insult to injury."Mr Steeples, from Chelsea, added: "The man refused to give his name but I have a witness who heard him admit it. Whatever the council may say officially, this is obviously the way they operate in practice. They admitted it themselves."The two men, who had arranged to meet for a drink, parked in Farm Lane, Fulham, at 6.45pm on 22 March. The pair, who claimed they thought parking restrictions were not in force in the residential area after 6.30pm, left their vehicles 55 yards apart on the same stretch of yellow line. When they returned an hour later, Mr Steeples's Range Rover had been towed away. He later discovered it had been ticketed at 7.17pm. Mr Rigg's van was still there, with a ticket timed at 7.25pm.Mr Rigg, 27, from Dulwich, who also runs a drinks firm, said: "I was happy that I did not have to pay as much as Matthew but it is clearly not a sensible or fair policy."I am a white-van man of sorts and my vehicle is about eight years old. But I need it for deliveries and I would have paid to get it back."Parking is a nightmare in Fulham but you expect the rules to be enforced equally at least."Illyana Reeves, a spokeswoman for Hammersmith & Fulham parking services, denied the council singles out expensive vehicles. She said: "That should not have been said to Mr Steeples. It is untrue."What normally happens is that we have got very few tow trucks. One truck arrives and takes a vehicle and then they will come back for the next one if there is not a second truck available."But sometimes the owner of the vehicle comes back before the tow truck returns."http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23391533-details/The+council+that+'only+bothers+towing+away+expensive+cars'/article.do

H&F Council's Budget Update

We had a chance to review the budget last night (Wednesday 24th Jan) at the Council’s value for Money Scrutiny Panel. The Council is looking to save £34 Million from its £180 million budget. I appreciate that people will have very different views on the budget priorities for our borough – which is fair enough – but I think it’s healthy for our local democracy for people to actually see what happens with their money. I’ve listed the budget highlights below. The budget papers are also available via the Council’s website.• Raise meals-on-wheels charges to the elderly by £200.75 per person, per annum • Cut £1.4 million by tightening criteria for the elderly and sick to get home help and restructure the service• Cut £915, 000 from street cleaning and refuse collection service• Cut £317, 000 from the play and youth services• Cut £150, 000 from Occupational Therapy Service making it harder for low-income, elderly and sick people to have their homes adapted to suit their disabilities• Cut £223, 000 from the vulnerable children's budget• Cut £530, 000 by closing mental health day-care facilities• Cut £325, 000 libraries and archives • Raise £300, 000 from parking• Cut £100, 000 reducing staff that process homeless people onto the housing register• Cut £100k used for school improvement and achievement• Cut £30, 000 to reduce storage facilities for homeless families to keep their belongings• Raise £436, 000 from advertising • Raise £150, 000 by lobbing the Home Office and ensuring the deportation of 25 asylum seeker children, currently in the Council’s care• Cut £505 from housing homeless families in temporary accomodation• Cut £200, 000 in grants to bring private sector homes up to standard• Cut £50, 000 from theatresLast night, the Finance Director and the Leader of the Council confirmed that they want to recycle monies raised from selling land off into repaying balances and reducing debt. Interestingly three of the sites they are considering selling off are currently occupied by schools. The Council has already published a notice to close Hurlingham and Chelsea Secondary School (one of the best improving schools in the country) and they're looking at closing two primary schools. The Administration was well aware of the political implications of confirming that they want to sell the school's land to private property developers (which have an estimated value of around £70m to £100 million) and so they would only say that it was a “consideration”. My advice is, watch this space as it will happen. You’ll recall that H&F cut 3% off the council tax this year. That’s equal to £27 of a band D bill and was partly achieved by taking £1.1 million from balances – which the Council hopes to repay through land sales.

Donkey story

A young man named Gordon bought a donkey from an old farmer for £100.00. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day, but when the farmer drove up he said, "Sorry son, but I have some bad news... the donkey is on my truck, but unfortunately he's dead." Gordon replied, "Well then, just give me my money back." The farmer said, "I can't do that, because I've spent it already." Gordon said, "OK then, well just unload the donkey anyway." The farmer asked, "What are you going to do with him?" Gordon answered, "I'm going to raffle him off." To which the farmer exclaimed, "Surely you can't raffle off a dead donkey!" But Gordon, with a wicked smile on his face said, "Of course I can, you watch me. I just won't bother to tell anybody that he's dead." A month later the farmer met up with Gordon and asked, "What happened with that dead donkey?" Gordon said, "I raffled him off, sold 500 tickets at two pounds a piece, and made a huge, fat profit!!" Totally amazed, the farmer asked, "Didn't anyone complain that you had stolen their money because you lied about the donkey being dead?" To which Gordon replied, "The only guy who found out about the donkey being dead was the raffle winner when he came to claim his prize. So I gave him his £2 raffle ticket money back plus an extra £200, which as you know is double the going rate for a donkey, so he thought I was a great guy!!" Gordon grew up and eventually became the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and no matter how many times he lied, or how much money he stole from the British voters, as long as he gave them back some of the stolen money, most of them, unfortunately, still thought he was a great guy. The moral of this story is , if you think Gordon is about to play fair and do something for the everyday people of the country for once in his miserable, lying life, think again my friend, because you'll be better off flogging a dead donkey!

Price Hike in Parking Fines to £120

Local parking fines will rise from £80 to £120 following the intervention of a Hammersmith and Fulham Councillor. Councillor Nick Botterill (Con), the Deputy Leader of Hammersmith and Fulham Council intervened in a London wide meeting to argue for increased rates of parking fines. The decision was made at the Conservative controlled London Councils - a body which represents all thirty three Councils in the Capital. The minutes of the meeting on 8th December show that Councillor Botterill objected when the meeting agreed to have an £80 fine for not displaying a ticket in a parking bay. Instead, Councillor Botterill argued for an increase to £120 and the meeting agreed to go with his recommended 50% hike in charges. The new charges will kick in from July. The funds raised from parking fines contribute directly to the Council's finances. Any increases are a means of raising extra funds for the local Council.Labour’s Cllr. Mike Cartwright raised the issue with his Tory opposite number at the last Council meeting and commented “At least Councillor Botterill had the good grace to look embarrassed when I raised this with him. Local people are genuinely shocked when they find out that it is one of our borough’s elected representatives who pushed through this massive increase in parking fines. He must have thought that nobody would go through the minutes of the meeting and that he would get away with it. He hasn’t”.

Council Tax Cut by 3% this year

I tried to post this earlier, so forgive me if it comes up twice"Tax cutting council bucks national trendAs council tax bills continue to soar across the country one London council is leading the way in cutting bills and providing top class front line services.Hammersmith & Fulham residents are set to see their council tax bills go down for the first time in over a decade. The council is proposing a 3 per cent council tax cut which is expected to be the biggest council tax drop in London – maybe the whole country. On average council tax has risen by 86 per cent in the last decade with taxpayers now braced for another round of hefty hikes. Londoners have seen their bills increase more quickly than any other tax since 1997 placing a huge burden on everyone, not least pensioners, the less well off and those on fixed incomes. The Mayor of London has also just announced a double whammy of huge fare rises on buses and the tube as well has his annual increase in his share of the bill. But in Hammersmith & Fulham the burden is being lifted with a lighter tax take and more cash for key front line services like schools and in cracking down on crime.Cllr Stephen Greenhalgh, Hammersmith & Fulham Council leader, says, “This is the first budget since the May 2006 election and we are combining lower tax with more cash for things that matter to residents. The council is pumping in £1.5million over two years to pay for round the clock beat policing in our town centres as well as spending more on schools and providing free homecare for our most vulnerable residents.”“We were elected to cut council tax bills and deliver better front line services and this is what our first budget does. While other councils are piling more tax on their residents we are reversing that trend and turning back the clock so that our council tax is now at 2004 levels. That's got to be great news for everyone, particularly for our pensioners and those on low incomes.”Across the 32 boroughs and the City of London the average local tax burden has soared by 86 per cent since 1996-97, about twice the rate pay has gone up, so, as Councillor Greenhalgh explains, tax cuts are possible without affecting front line services. Councillor Greenhalgh continues, "Delivering on our council tax promises means cutting waste and bureaucracy and looking to the market to see if services can be delivered more efficiently. We are not ideologically wedded to privatisation but surely it is prudent for in house services to be forced to compete with private contractors to see if the same, or even better, services can be delivered more efficiently.”Matthew Elliott, Chief Executive of the Taxpayers’ Alliance says, “Council tax has doubled in ten years and some people now think annual increases are inevitable.  So it’s good news for taxpayers in Hammersmith & Fulham that the council is leading the way with a good cut that will start giving pensioners and hardworking families more of their own money to spend on their own priorities. We hope this starts a trend across London.”Hammersmith & Fulham’s cut comes as other councils are moving in the other direction, piling the pressure on their taxpayers and struggling to keep rises below the government imposed ceiling of 5 per cent. And it’s not just inefficient councils that taxpayers should be frightened of.“It’s true that the Mayor of London’s hike, in his share of the bill, will eat into a large part of the savings we have made,” continues Cllr Greenhalgh. “We have no control over what he does and although we have highlighted our concerns to him in the strongest possible terms – he just doesn’t seem to care.”The budget report, which proposes the tax cuts, will be examined in a series of public scrutiny meetings early in the New Year before going to full council for final approval on February 28.Cllr Greenhalgh concludes, “This budget is a good start, but it is only the beginning. Providing value for money drives everything we are doing to transform the town hall. We will be one of the only councils in the country to cut council tax this year and the benefits will be felt by everyone when lighter bills drop through their doors.“It is important that people understand these tax cuts are not at the expense of frontline services. We are cutting council waste, red tape and bureaucracy and, as councils like our neighbours Wandsworth have proved, it is possible to have excellent frontline services and low council tax. “Residents should compare our efficiency to the Mayor of London’s tax escalator which will once again go up in 2007/8. He is going to hammer taxpayers with an increase of well over 5 per cent as well as clobbering commuters with a 33 per cent hike.”

H&F Council’s Budget Sham

It is astonishing that local Tories claim to have delivered their reduction in council tax off the back of efficiency savings. They have, in fact, introduced £multi-million cuts in services, taken over £1 million out of the Council’s savings and failed to invest in Labour’s plan to give the five wards with the highest crime 24/7 police squads. If you consider that £600k equals 1% off Council tax in H&F, then it is easy to work out how the Tories have made the cut – equivalent to £27 off a Band D bill.Since the May elections, the Tories have announced the closure of Hurlingham and Chelsea secondary school, have slashed the home help and meals-on wheels services, cut street cleaning to the tune of £500k and introduced a range of new charges, such as increasing burial cost for local people by almost 50%. The Tory Council has cancelled 500 affordable homes, virtually closed down the low-cost house-building programme and is cutting funding to the voluntary sector and the arts. We know that the Tory Administration are considering closing up to two more primary schools and are looking at selling off Council housing on the open market.Just before Christmas, the Government generously awarded £3.6 million more to Hammersmith & Fulham than anyone expected in its financial settlement. That is enough for a 6% cut to local council tax. Labour wants to know why the Tory council has not made this cut and why it has failed to make the investment in fighting crime. Indeed, their priorities seem very odd with the Council spending £1 million to introduce blue signs, blue carpets, blue paint, new propaganda and a new blue council logo.Following the Council elections last May, the Labour Opposition made a public promise to the new Tory Administration. We told them that we understood that the next Council elections will not be until 2010 and if in the meantime they could deliver better services and lower Council tax then we would vote with them. Despite our commitment to work with them, this Tory Administration has unleashed one of the most hard-nosed cuts programmes in the UK.Labour believes that there is room for reductions in Council tax but that this should come from making the Council more effective. The Council should cut waste and not take the bureaucrats' easy option of cutting services. These are proving dark days for many people in our borough with children, the elderly, the low waged, the homeless and the vulnerable all targeted for cuts - people least likely to kick up a fuss. To be fair to the Administration; they are Tories and that is what they do. So why try to make out that they are not cutting services when it is plain for all to see they are?  Maybe, after so many years in the political wilderness they are still too nervous to admit that Hammersmith & Fulham Tories are a group of very old-fashioned Thatcherite Conservatives.Cllr. Cardross St - Proposed Changes to Waiting Restrictions

Is anybody else for or against this daft idea?Extract from email to LBHF... I am staggered to hear your proposal, given the problems we had with Mr Khana et al when Zone L was introduced, and before that when you 'arranged' for 500 cars an hour to be diverted up Cardross St by installing a barrier at the northern end of Bradmore. I will detail my very many objections over the coming days, but for now please let me request further information. 1. How many properties in Cardross St have requested a double yellow line be implemented. 2. What proportion of these are residents on the western side. 3. I suspect you treat these letters in confidence, but would you be able to identify key residents who have written to you on this subject by name and number in order that there can be an open discussion between them and those who are against this proposal. I am particularly concerned if they have held thmselves out to you as being representative of many other residents. 4. Why has the Council's position on emergency access changed since Zone L was introduced. Then Mr Khana told us "the Council only had a responsibility to provide unobstructed access during the hours 09:00 to 17:00." 5. Cars already travel much too fast up the road during the day, even with the recent cushions. What further traffic calming plans will you have to bring in once the natural calming of evening parked vehicles on the western side is removed. 6. How many incidents of emergency vehicles being unable to get to their destination have there been since Zone L was introduced, by service. 7. Which emergency services have expressed concern about access. Please provide the names of the contacts in these services who will be able to confirm their concerns direct to the residents. 8. What additional security steps will you provide to increase the security for residents who now will have to park 'several' roads away, away from the watchful eyes of their near neighbours and out of earshot from their car alarms. 9. What alternative measures have you considered as a possible solution. 10. What consideration have you given to the change in the 'evening ambience' that turning Cardross St, the nicest street in the area into a 24hr race track.  11. What public website do you offer or point residents at where they may collaborate in their peer-to-peer discussions and with you on matters such as this. I expect to think of further questions over the coming days, but in the meantime I look forward to your prompt reply on these questions such that I may research the matter fully in time to reply to your deadline. Advertising hoarding on Seven Stars pub

I've received a note trhough the door from Martin Scrutton (I think....apologies if I've mis-read the signature) pointing out that BPS advertising have installed a billboard on the Seven Stars pub, facing south down Paddenswick Road (towards Ravencourt Park). They didn't bother to get planning permission, and have only now applied for perimssion as LBHF have told them to take it down.I've sent the text below in a letter to LBHF, and would urge you to do the same.RegardsAndrew======Mr Nick FarrellLBHF Development Management Services3rd Floor, Town Hall ExtensionKing StreetLondonW6 9JUOpposition to Planning application 2006/02583.ADVDear Mr FarrellI am writing in opposition to the abovementioned planning application.  I understand that a previous application to erect a billboard on this site was made, and rejected, in the mid-1990s.  I cannot imagine that the arguments which were used to successfully oppose that application are any less relevant today.BPS Advertising have acted in an unsociable and irresponsible manner in erecting this advertising hoarding and knowingly breaking the planning regulations in a conservation area.I urge the Council to take a strong stand against those that seek to undermine their planning regulations as BPS have done.  If their application is allowed, I fear that they and other companies will presume that they can ignore planning regulations and get away with it, or at least, that they can act first and get planning permission later.Thank you for your attention to this matter.Yours Andrew Broadbent

Grass roots entertainment in Hammersmith

My first foray into forum contact....I love living in Hammersmith because it has all the diversity of the big city - but it can also have the comforting familiarity of being a member of a village community. My contribution to 'village' life was to run a weekly blues evening at the Brook Green Hotel.  Over 3 years it established itself as a place to drop in after work on a Friday for the locals, and a destination place for people who love early acoustic blues. Brooks Blues Bar was the only place in London where one could hear this genre of music. There was a great atmosphere and the bar was perfect in every way - good music, good pub food and good beer. The cellar bar also hosted jazz and a comedy night during the week, plus salsa and world music as weekends. So what happened?  A new manager and area manager decided they wanted to change this Edwardian pub into something more 'upmarket???' and banished all advertising of these local events.  Within a couple of months this policy killed us all off. (She said she wanted to replace us and hire out to cellar bar for organisers of speed dating/kareoke/disco/'schoolkids' evenings). So this month Brooks Blues Bar has relocated to new venues, one in  Notting Hill and one in St Margarets Twickenham - Hammersmith's loss. The comedy has moved to another venue and the jazz has vanished for the moment. Ths salsa may have returned, but the soul has gone out of the place. So if anyone knows of a basement bar in Hammersmith where it would be possible to continue with our Friday blues nights - we would love to return to our roots - let us know. And on the subject of mice - I had colonies of them, plus 5 cats who had great fun hunting them.  So the combination of keeping all food in containers and the cats, eventually made them leave...I could not bring myself to kill them, although I condoned the cat's carnage, when the mice came out to feast on the cat food.  So before resoring to poison, try keeping all food in plastic containers or tin, and so remove their food source(especially chocolate).  During the worst of the colonisation one mouse casually strolled onto the coffee table and started to nibble at the chocolate in a dish, oblivious to its human audience.  That was when I bought the tin!  No mice now, and the cats are bored.

Revised Draft

Dear Stephen,A number of us who are regulars on the Hammersmith community neighbournet website are concerned about the lack of activity on the Forum (see hyperlink below). On Friday at 14:36 one of our members checked and there were 178 people connected to the ChiswickW4 website (see hyperlink below) ; with only  7 connected to the Hammersmith site. One would expect peak activity at this stage - especially among bored office workers like myself!  Whilst the demographics may in part explain a difference, this can't be certainly the full story. It is unclear why so few people use it. The Chiswick forum is a model of excellence. In fact many of us from Hammersmith use the Chiswick forum. The police and councillors use the forum on a regular basis (Indeed, Councillor Adrian Lee is a prolific contributor to the site – I have copied Councillor Lee in). It espouses the values, which the Conservative party nationally wants to promote. A vibrant forum can offer a number of benefits to the community:an effective space for advise / recommendations  on services such as tradesmen, etcCould be used as a sounding board for political representatives on new proposalsProvide information on the local areaCould assist in crime prevention. Both victims of crime and the police use the Chiswick ForumSocial networking – assists in getting people together for football, softball etc, social events etc. Assist local historians. Creates a sense of communityStimulate intellectual debate on current issues - allowing people to get issues 'off their chest', rather than having to participate in more national / global forums.Help increase the  stock of social capital in the area. (Robert Putnam the American Public Policy expert has said – ‘that social capital  has plummeted, impoverishing our lives and communities’. Putnam drew on evidence including nearly 500,000 interviews in the US over the last quarter century to show that we sign fewer petitions, belong to fewer organizations that meet, know our neighbors less, meet with friends less frequently, and even socialize with our families less) Help lonely hearts   - the Chiswick site even organises dating evenings!I think there is a lot of merit in the council promoting the use of the Forum, perhaps through the Council’s newspaper or maybe there could be a hyperlink on the Borough site. Maybe councillors and police could also potentially use the forum. This would help generate more traffic and encourage people who are registered to use it more. (http://www.hammersmithtoday.co.uk/default.asp?section=community&link=http://nnet-server.com/server/app/forum/default.asp?site=7) (http://www.chiswickw4.com/default.asp?section=community&link=http://nnet-server.com/server/app/forum/default.asp?site=1I suggest we have a brief meeting to discuss further. Perhaps Cllr. Lee could attend to explain to us the benefits of the Chiswick Forum (virtual Cafes from Chiswick of old come to mind!). Kind Regard

Maybe councillors and police could also potentially use the forum. This would help generate more traffic and encourage people who are registered to use it more. Look forrward to hearing from you.Kind Regards

The Ark- O&H Construction

Just a story you might be interested in. O&H construction who sold the Hammersmith embankment development to Akeler and delancey and whom local residents had great difficulties with over the years on the vacant site and same O&H who moved the resident houseboat Arctic away from its moorings have moved back into Hammersmith and purchased The Ark in a joint venture with GE.  LONDON, 29 MARCH, 2006 – GE Real Estate UK, in a joint venture with O&H, has acquired the Ark, Hammersmith, West London from Deka for £49.5 million. The Ark comprises 150,000 sqft (13,935 sqm) of office space. It was originally built in 1992 and designed for a single-let tenant. Landid (the development company established last year by Akeler’s former Chief Executive Officer, Trevor Silver and Director, Stephen Morgan) has been appointed Incentivised Development Manager and will be responsible for delivering an extensive refurbishment programme, which will involve reconfiguring certain elements of the building to enable multi-occupation. Alec Burger, Managing Director of GE Real Estate UK, commented: “We have exciting plans to refurbish the Ark. The current layout comprises a tiered floor layout, which is only suitable for a single tenant. We will be looking to create more regular floor plates and deliver an office space that is capable of being multi-let. “This acquisition is in line with our strategy to increase our presence across London and we look forward to working with Landid once again, following the acquisition of the Axis portfolio in January, for £52 million. “The Axis portfolio comprises four office buildings and represented the first joint venture between GE Real Estate and Landid, who provides a wealth of management expertise to every project.” Stephan Morgan of Landid commented: “We are delighted to be working on such a high profile project with GE Real Estate, on what is our second venture together, and with O&H. We are hugely confident that we can unlock value in this inspirational West London landmark and are pleased to have the opportunity to bring The Ark back to life.”

'nuff said!

SSRA is the Sinclair Road Residents' Association.Madam, Sir It is with a great deal of surprise that we have received the latest 'Labour Action Team for Addison' circular. It is with a great deal of anger that we see that the work which has been done by Sinclair Road Residents Association members over the past four years has been hijacked for political gain. As you know perfectly well yourselves, the campaign against rogue estate agents and fly-boarding was not initiated by Labour, or, indeed by the Labour-controlled council. This inititiative was set and worked upon solely by SRRA volunteers; at no point in the past did Labour offer to help in this matter; it jumped instead on the bandwagon two months ago, when all the hard work had been done by our association. To refresh your memory: It was an SRRA campaigner who alerted the Council that it was possible to use a so-called 'section 7 order' to curb the excesses of local estate agents, and who, after meeting complete inertia, had to provide the Council with the information it needed, carrying all the research work on his own.It was SRRA which carried out a survey in the area, which showed clearly that getting rid of fly-postering was a very important issue for local residents. It was SRRA volunteers who patrolled our streets for several weeks to present irrefutable data to LBHF enforcing officers, and provided them with a substantial dossier that forms the basis of the Council's request for action. It was SRRA which kept up the pressure on the council to ensure the process was carried out. We are deeply shocked that no effort was made by you - at any stage - to discuss the matter with our association. As a strictly non-politically aligned group, we would have welcome this opportunity, as we welcome the opportunity to work with all stakeholders in our community. As you decided to leaflet the area with the quite extraordinary claim that, somehow, it would be thanks to the Labour Action team for Addison that this campaign would be a success, SRRA is left with no alternative but to make its position public. Copies of this email have been addressed to all our members, as well as to representatives of the local media. Regards, Philippe Auclair & Denis Carroll, Joint Chairs, for and on behalf of SRRA

Introductory Talk on Meta-Medicine

Discover what may cause disease, pains, illnesses or Cancers using Meta-Medicine® Meta-Medicine® is not a therapy but a diagnostic tool that aims to answer why a disease has occurred, what is the biological reason for it being there and what may be the best therapeutic solution so the body can heal itself more effectively.Used in Germany by medical doctors and health practitioners, Meta-Medicine® aims to demonstrate how our body’s survival programmes, coded in our DNA, can be triggered by emotional shocks, which show up on brain CT scans as rings in specific areas. Each one of these rings corresponds to an organ in the body. By working back from a symptom, via The Meta-Medicine® Brain Directory and Meta-Medicine® questioning techniques, it is possible to establish what was the biological conflict shock that caused the disease to occur and then what might be the most effective therapeutic intervention so a person can get back to good health.Meta-Medicine® may answer why certain ‘unsolvable’ diseases such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Asthma, Eczema, Depression and Cancer can occur, maybe offering a possible solution back to good health.Join us April 7th 7-9pm at: London Bhuddist Vihara,  The Avenue,  Chiswick,  London,  W4 1UD.     Seats are limited so CALL NOW to reserve your FREE place on   0845 140 0075The talk will cover these topics:• How a disease is not a mistake of the body but an environmental, body, mind and spirit programme that seemingly affects everything we do• Learn how disease is a two phased process that is there for a survival reason• Discover how ‘Biological Conflict Shocks’ can cause disease in even the healthiest of people• Answer what may be the cause of a Cancer• See live demonstrations of the Meta-Medicine® diagnostic process• Understand how Meta-Medicine® can be applied to Traditional Medicine, Complimentary and Alternative Therapeutic interventionsAdvanced Mind Body Diagnosis Meta-Medicine® UK  ww.metamedicine.org.uk  0845 140 0075

Parking Permits and dog mess (boring, I know)

Hi I'm new to this forum but have lived in the borough for almost six months, was in Chiswick previously and have spent most of my life in West London (and an avid QPR fan since a nipper).I've basically got the hump, not about QPR but the Council..My gripe is this.. When I moved in I paid £55 for a 6 month permit enabling me to park my car (If I am lucky) in the road infront of my flat. Now the permit is up for renewal, I have to pay 200 odd quid for another 6 month permit - what's that all about ??? I don't even have the option of paying in installments !Last Thursday, in the early hours, on the same day my notice of permit renewal arrived, I parked my car in a space near where I live. I got out of the car and stepped onto the pavement and into a mountain dogs mess. So bad that It cost me a pair of trainers and a pair of trousers ! I called the council the following morning asking what their policy is on Dog Fouling, I was told they don't have a policy on Dog Fouling and have no officers on patrol with the authority to serve  abatement notices to irresponsible dog owners. So, I now have to pay my £230 or whatever it is to park my car, outside my flat, on which I incur an already excessive Council tax and just have to accept the dog crap on the pavement. Hammersmith Council, "Serving Our Community" Fleecing it more like.I think it is an outrage ! Keen to hear how other car owners and pedestrians feel about this.

Reply from the Borough Commander

Following on from Edward's thread I got this from the Borough Commander's office, which I thought was encouraging:Chief Superintendent Valentine has asked me to reply on her behalf regarding the issues you raise. You are right to raise the issue of cyclist riding their bikes on pavements. Having read the forum the thread splits this issue into two. The illegal riding of bikes on pavements and the associated increased risks of an accident and secondly the use of bikes by criminals. I am combating the second issue by working with the local authority undertaking various operations aimed at identifying and arresting such criminals. This will include such activity as putting officers out on pedal cycles and foot and vehicle patrols. Using officers on bikes is very effective because they can use the same 'rat runs' and  alleyways as the cyclists themselves something cars and bikes cannot do. Unfortunately it is not as easy as just asking officers to patrol on bikes as I am bound by guidance which slows the process down but rest assured I will do my best to make it happen as quickly as possible. Whilst we do know who some of the criminals are we do know them all. As in investigating and preventing all crime the use of the public is critical to our success. If anyone knows who these people are they can either call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or contact me direct and I will ensure the information is used confidentially. With regards the second issue the cyclist who ignores red lights etc this is often the commuter cyclist who should know better. These cyclists not only put others at risk but also themselves by ignoring traffic signs etc. I will ask my officers to look out for this but this will not be a priority and needs a wider approach probably lead by Transport for London. Having just arrived on the borough from Hounslow and used the ChiswickW4 site I know how important and useful these forums are. Thanks once again for writing to us with your concerns Dave PageSuperintendent Operations

Mv Arctic, Hammersmith Embankment

Dear all, it has been a long time since we have spoken and myself and my family have been out of our home since Feb.17. Since then I have been working hard to legitimise all things relative to mooring my boat on the river. Unfortunately, I have had to work alone, that is why it has taken so long. I now have a rarity on the river, which is a certificate of lawful development for permanent mooring comprising of one residential unit, entitling myself and Arctic to legally moor & reside at the Hammersmith site. App. No. 2005/00431/CLE. If you are unfamiliar with our boat, it is renowned as having one of the nicest gardens in Hammersmith. The reason I am contacting you is because I would like your support to encourage the Hammersmith Consultation Team (www.hammersmithconsultation.co.uk) to include residential mooring and MV Arctic on their new plans. As you may be aware there is only a rowing club and visitor moorings planned. There is already a six berth private marina with visitor mooring, no more than 400 metres downriver. This has been dormant except for one (landlord) since it was built in approx. 1998. As I already have planning permission to reside, the council would have difficulty refusing.I have the support of over eleven hundred people in the local community and three local resident associations. I am a full member of the Dutch Barge Association and the Resident Boat Owners Association and whom fully support me. There is a huge necessity for residential moorings on the river and an even greater need in west London.I have already forwarded a copy of my certificate of planning to Jessica Stewart in Hammersmith Consultation and I am awaiting a reply. A letter contact from you to them would be sincerely & greatly appreciated . Thanking everyone for there support, Yours Eamon, Kate, Isabelle and Eden. 07966169031  www.mvarctic.co.uk

Bedford Jezzard - ex landlord of Thatched House

Thought anyone who drinks in this pub might find the following obit from the Independent interesting.++++Bedford Jezzard, who died on May 21 aged 77, was one of the most prolific goalscorers of the 1950s; such was his strike-rate that he was capped by England even though his club, Fulham, were then languishing in the Second Division. Jezzard's anni mirabiles were between 1952 and 1956 when, fed by Johnny Haynes and Bobby Robson, he scored 123 times in 160 matches. In the 1953-54 season he claimed 38 league goals, a tally that remains Fulham's post-war record.Strong, quick off the mark and determined, Jezzard's abilities came to the attention of the England manager Walter Winterbottom, and having scored a hatrick for England B against West Germany in March 1954, he made his debut against Hungary in Budapest in May that year. That the side was mauled 7-1 by the Magyars was no fault of Jezzard's, and he travelled with the squad to that year's World Cup in Switzerland. He could not, however, displace a front line assembled from the talents of Tom Finney, Stanley Matthews, Nat Lofthouse and Tommy Taylor, and in the event played only once more for England, in late 1955 against Northern Ireland.Bedford Alfred George Jezzard was born at Clerkenwell, London, on October 19 1927. He played amateur football for Watford, and, following Army service in India at the end of the war, joined Fulham in 1948. After just three matches, he was promoted from the reserves to the first team, which he helped to that season's Second Division Championship. As now, Fulham was a homely club, lacking the resources of their London rivals. The side managed to cling on to their new status until 1952, when they returned to the Second Division. But it was the making of Jezzard. In total, he would score 154 goals (all in the league) for Fulham in 306 matches, a haul surpassed since only by Haynes and Gordon Davies. At the age of 30, Jezzard was forced to retire by an ankle injury. Soon he became youth coach at Fulham, and nine months later took over as manager. He radiated a quiet authority, and won promotion back to the First Division in his first season in charge. As well as Haynes, the side now boasted Jimmy Hill, Tosh Chamberlain and the young George Cohen, and the team kept their heads well above water for the next four years. Although they were never title contenders, in 1962 a gallant run took them to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.Jezzard, still in his mid-thirties, was marked out for great things; but the culture of football had begun to change, spurred principally by Hill's successful campaign against the maximum wage. With small clubs now no longer able to prevent their talent from moving to better-paying teams, it made sense to cash in their assets, and in 1964 the directors of Fulham sold the team's rising star Alan Mullery to Tottenham.Jezzard was not consulted, and with the club's long-serving general manager and trainer having recently departed as well, he decided to turn his back on the game. For many years afterwards he happily ran the Thatched House pub in Hammersmith.

Heathrow Expansion -  Clive Soley

Hello, I'm a reporter on the Hammersmith and Fulham Gazette. We're thinking about doing a follow up on this story in the Times, do you have any comments? If so, call me on 020 8579 3131 or email me at editor@hammersmithgazette.co.ukA LEADING Labour peer is to spearhead a campaign by airlines for a £4 billion development of Heathrow airport, including a third runway and a sixth terminal, The Times has learnt. Clive Soley, a close ally of Tony Blair and a former chairman of Labour’s parliamentary party, will be confirmed as the director of Future Heathrow when it launches on May 23. The group will be funded by British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and bmi british midland and includes the CBI and several trade unions. But BAA, which owns Heathrow as well as Gatwick and Stansted, has refused to join the group, saying that it does not want to be seen to favour one of its airports over another. Lord Soley, who was ennobled last week and has just stepped down as MP for Ealing, Acton and Shepherds Bush, has previously voiced opposition to the expansion of Heathrow. However, he now claims the airport will be eclipsed by its rivals in Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam unless new capacity is added. He will be paid £28,000 a year to work part-time, lobbying the Government to allow a short third runway north of the existing two full-length ones. BA believes that the appointment of Lord Soley will significantly increase its chances of securing a third runway by 2015. The Government’s White Paper on airport development supported the construction of a new runway between 2015 and 2020 but said that this was subject to fulfilling a series of environmental criteria. Lord Soley told The Times: “I have accepted this appointment because of the threat to West London. It is inevitable that Heathrow will decline unless a third runway is built. “The impact could be similar to the closure of the docks in East London. Unemployment could go through the roof and house prices through the floor. “Some of my colleagues think I exaggerate the threat but I believe the danger is real.” Lord Soley admitted that he may previously have given the impression that he was opposed to expansion at Heathrow. “I said I didn’t want a third runway but I set against that the need for Heathrow to remain a vibrant, premier airport,” he said. Clearskies, a lobby group against the expansion, said that Lord Soley had previously given them his support. John Stewart, chairman of Clearskies, said: “While he was an MP, Clive Soley failed to make clear to us that he backed a third runway. But now he has left office he is willing to take the airline industry’s shilling. “His former constituents who are blighted by aircraft noise will be dismayed to learn he is now campaigning to make their lives even worse.” Heathrow is currently limited to handling 480,000 flights a year. Under the expansion plans supported, the number of flights would increase to 655,000 by 2015. Up to 700 homes and eight listed buildings would be demolished.

GREG HANDS IS NOT WHAT HE APPEARS TO BE - BEWARE

Greg Hands is doing everything possible to be all things to all people. I believe the Hammersmith and Fulham voters are too smart to fall for his act.He plays Mr Liberal Centre Conservative.  Yet he is a member of the most right-wing Thatcherite association.  Visit - www.conwayfor.org - where you will see Greg is on the executive committee. Sharing the same principles as Tebbit, Parkinnson etc.  I think this is a wonderful organisation as it is anti-europe, pro smaller Government and pro privatisation. Greg does not talk of these priciples in any of his election literature - rather he hides from it.  Tebbit, Parkinson are legends - both against Europe. Modern day heros.Yet Greg will talk of defending the local post office.  This is a contradiction of his membership of Conservative Way Forward that believes, lobbies and advocates privatisation.  I would be proud if I was a member - not hide.Greg, the Conservative candidate for Hammersmith & Fulham, has issued an election leaflet highlighting the recent illness of Iain Coleman. The document tells voters that Mr Coleman was left with "slurred speech and problems walking" after suffering the stroke. It goes on to point out the Labour MP has not spoken or voted in Parliament since last May because of his condition. How can we accept this behaviour of our parliamentary candidate?American Conservative Union Chairman, David Keene, welcomed the English delegation and Greg Hands to CPAC in Washington, D.C. Speakers at the Conference included Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney; Senate Majority Leader, Tom Delay; Lt. Col. Oliver North, Wayne LaPierre, National Rifle Association; Asa Hutchinson, Undersecretary for Border and Transportation Security Designate;  Greg talks about crime yet when he was recently in the States (see list above)he spent time with the National Rifle Association who lobby for every American to own a gun. Above is a list of the right wing attendees. Scary list of Republican Politicians.  Is Greg confused?  Or does he think we should all have guns in Hammersmith and Fulham.Greg is a staunch right winger - which I would congratulated him on.  However, he plays a game - to hide his true self - with the voters and will be a different animal if elected.UKIP is the only genuine party fighting for H and F.

CHARING CROSS HOSPITAL CLOSURE

Article in today's Observer newspaper:"One of Britain's most prestigious teaching hospitals is set to close as a result of huge debts created by more NHS patients being treated in private centres, as well as soaring building maintenance bills. Charing Cross hospital in west London would shut down and its services move to its sister hospital, the Hammersmith, but senior health officials will not discuss them publicly until after the election. Consultants at both hospitals were told of the plans last week, but were warned by their chief executive that it would be officially denied if the plans emerged in the run-up to polling day..." "Consultants were told at a meeting last week that the tower block which houses most of its services is set to be demolished .The site, in a prime site close to the Thames could be sold for a great deal to housing developers. Services would then move two miles north to the Hammersmith Hospital site, where new buildings would be needed for the expansion. It is even rumoured that Wormwood Scrubs prison, which occupies a large piece of ground alongside the Hammersmith hospital, may be sold off by the Home Office and that the Victorian building would be rebuilt to accommodate most of the Charing Cross wards and departments. The Home Office, however, has firmly denied any intention to sell off the prison. Last Monday, consultants at both hospitals were called into a meeting with Derek Smith, chief executive of the Trust. Smith, the highest paid executive within the NHS on a salary of £210,000, explained that they had to produce plans for a reconfiguration of services, because the costs of maintaining the status quo were too high. It would cost £100m simply to make the Charing Cross site completely safe - the ageing concrete and its system of air ducts makes meeting fire regulations difficult. On his desk Smith had architects' drawings, which suggested to those present that the plans were more than the beginnings of a proposal. A consultant who was at the meeting said: 'We were left in no doubt that closing the Charing Cross and rebuilding the Hammersmith was really the only realistic possibility. Derek explained that it couldn't be announced before an election; in fact he said that he would deny it if was put to him.' The doctors left with the understanding that the plans would be unveiled in June. There will then have to be a full-scale public consultation before any changes can be made. The trust has hit a number of financial difficulties over the past year. By the end of March, the official figure stood at just £5m in the red but some staff have been told that they need to make savings of around £25m this year. Last autumn, it had to start restricting admissions because the bodies holding the purse strings, the primary care trusts, were themselves in deficit. But many of their problems stem from a decision three years ago to buy Ravenscourt Park for £14m with the aim of tackling the long waiting lists for hip and knee operations across west London. The number of patients they predicted to use the service did not go there, and earlier this year it had to close one ward and just 40 of its 116 beds were being used. Several doctors think it is a good idea to move all the services onto one site. Professor Charles Coombes, head of cancer services, said: 'The real question is how you maximise the benefits for the patients of all the new treatments that are being developed. If you have one third of your cancer patients treated on one site, and two thirds on another site, it really is not ideal...' "But others are worried about whether services will be protected if the Charing Cross tower really does disappear. It is likely that as a major accident and emergency centre some kind of casualty cover would have to be maintained there. John Lister, of the health watchdog London Health Emergency, said: 'People in south-west London will be horrified by this proposal. There has been no open discussion, and we know that any hospital rebuilding always costs many millions more than the original predictions. 'We may be coming up to an election, but wouldn't this be a suitable time to discuss what kind of hospitals we want to see in the future?'

Local Tory accused of 'dirty tricks'

Article from Evening Standard!Tory accused over 'dirty tricks' leaflet By Jason Beattie Political Correspondent, Evening Standard 10 February 2005 A Tory candidate was accused today of trying to smear a Labour MP who has fought back from a stroke. Greg Hands, the Conservative candidate for Hammersmith & Fulham, has issued an election leaflet highlighting the recent illness of Iain Coleman. The document tells voters that Mr Coleman was left with "slurred speech and problems walking" after suffering the stroke. It goes on to point out the Labour MP has not spoken or voted in Parliament since last May because of his condition. The row comes days after the Conservatives rounded on Labour for waging a "dirty tricks" campaign ahead of the general election. But Labour said Mr Hands's action showed the Conservatives were resorting to underhand techniques. One Labour official described the leaflet as the "lowest of the low". Mr Coleman, 47, had a stroke last July. Although he had temporary paralysis in one of his legs, he was back at work in September and is expected to make a full recovery. The MP, who had a majority of 2,015 over the Conservatives at the 2001 election, questioned his opponent's sincerity. He said: "I thought he [Hands] was being a bit snide. It is a very marginal seat and [the Conservatives] are going to fight a vigorous campaign. They say they want to fight a clean campaign and we will judge them on what they do." In the leaflet, distributed across the constituency, Mr Hands writes: "Local residents will have seen in the papers reports that the local MP has had a stroke. Due to his illness, the MP has not spoken or voted in Parliament since May 2004 and has made no known public appearances in Hammersmith & Fulham in the last eight months." Mr Hands adds: "We wish the MP all the best for a swift recovery and look forward to a vigorous campaign. "We need to make sure that all the issues like tax, the economy, the NHS and schools are properly debated." Speaking to the Evening Standard, Mr Hands expressed surprise his remarks had caused distress, saying: "The message was very clear that we were wishing him the best for a swift recovery. "This leaflet was put out weeks ago and the fact that there's a controversy bears all the hallmarks of a national Labour spin operation. Labour's complaint is a gross distortion. At no point was there any suggestion from me that political capital was being made from someone's illness." Labour accused the Conservatives of fighting the "dirtiest possible" personalised campaign. A party spokesman said: "They claim that Labour's questioning of Michael Howard's record as the minister who gave us the poll tax and three million unemployed, and who supported 15 per cent interest rates, is part of a dirty campaign. But when it comes to dirty campaigns, Michael Howard's Tories wrote the book."
