THE BCA CINECLUB RE-OPENS THIS TUESDAY
The 2003 season opens with a special tribute to Humberto Mauro, one of the precursors of Brazilian cinema: O Descobrimento do Brasil (The Discovery of Brazil) of 1937, followed by a series of shorts entitled Humberto Mauro, where the director gives his motion picture reading of some of the most popular Brazilian songs and folklore from 1945 to 1964.

The 2003 Season Film Title: O Descobrimento do Brasil Director: Humberto Mauro Date: Tuesday 11 February 2003 at 4.30 and 7.00 pm Synopsis: Humberto Mauro reconstructs Pedro Alvaro Cabral's voyage of discovery of Brazil, by following Pero Vaz de Caminha's letter reporting Cabral's findings, to D. João, King of Portugal, from the time the fleet leaves Lisbon from the Taegus River, up to the moment the first mass on Brazilian soil is said. With music by Villa Lobos, and Alvaro Costa as Pedro Alvares Cabral, Manoel Rocha as Pero Vaz de Caminha, Alfredo Silva as Friar Henrique de Coimbra, De los Rios as Duarte Pacheco, and Reginaldo Calmon as the Aracati Indian. Film Title: Bossa Nova Director: Bruno Barreto Date: Tuesday 11 March 2003 at 4.30 and 7.00 pm Synopsis: Rio and its breathtaking landscape and the involving music of Tom Jobim set the stage for this amusing comedy. It revolves around the charming widowed English teacher Mary Ann, a lawyer and his brother, the day-dreamer Nadine and a football player. The fate of these people is permeated by love and funny misunderstandings provoked by cultural and linguistic differences. The love story is spiced up by the wonderful songs from the 60's Bossa Nova music movement. Directed by Bruno Barreto, with Amy Irving, Antonio Fagundes, Alexandre Borges and Drica Moraes. Film Title: Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) Director: Marcel Camus Date: Tuesday 25 March 2003 at 4.30 and 7.00 pm Synopsis: 1960 Academy Award Winner and winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival, Marcel Camus' Black Orpheus retells the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice against the madness of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. With its magnificent colour photography and lively soundtrack, this film brought the infectious Bossa Nova beat to the world. Directed by Marcel Camus, with Breno Mello, Marpessa Dawn, Lourdes de Oliveira, Léa Garcia, Adhemar Feirrera da Silva, Waldetar de Souza, Alexandre Constantino, Jorge dos Santos, Aurino Cassiano and Maria Alice. Now Holmes will need much more than his British flair, detective's wit and Watson's loyal help, to discover that in Brazil, nothing is really 'elementary'. This hilarious parody is based on Jô Soares' novel of the same name. Film Title: Um Copo de Cólera Director: Aluísio Abranches Date: Tuesday 22 April 2003 at 4.30 and 7.00 pm Synopsis: Based on the acclaimed novel by Raduan Nasser, Um Copo de Cólera tell the story of a day in the life of a couple: a forty year old man, who has a country house outside São Paulo, away from society, and a young, attractive and feminine journalist, politically engaged. One evening, he arrives at his country house and finds the woman waiting for him. They head straight to the bedroom for a night of passion. The following day, as they are having breakfast, he discovers that his hedge has been badly damaged by ants. This trivial country event unleashes a terrible wrath on him and disrupts the apparent harmony between the couple. This leads to an ugly argument and a whirlwind of cutting and tense emotions.
