Brook Green home zone review

"It's a much nicer environment to live in", says resident association

A pedestrian haven in Brook Green has been judged a success by residents and Hammersmith & Fulham Council at a recent review.

The Brook Green home zone was introduced in May 2004 following requests from local residents, and the second phase of work was completed in March of this year. The whole zone is now covered by a 20mph speed limit and traffic calming measures have been introduced including speed cushions, raised entrances and raised junctions.

Council officers found that speeds have reduced by up to 23 per cent and traffic flow has improved in the majority of roads since the scheme was introduced. There are also early indications that the number of road traffic accidents has reduced dramatically since the home zone came into effect.

Simon Coventry, Chair of The Brook Green Association said: "We have been campaigning for traffic calming measures in the area for more than 10 years and I am delighted with the difference the home zone has made. Not only does it make Brook Green a safer place to live, it's also a much nicer environment to live in."

Addison Ward Councillor Melanie Smallman, who chairs the Brook Green home zone working party, said: "We're committed to making this area cleaner, safer and greener, so it has been fantastic to work with local people to make this scheme happen. We've had excellent feedback from the residents of Addison and Brook Green and I'm really pleased that the homezone is proving to be such a success."

A further £30,000 has been secured from Transport for London to install cycle stands and improve cycle route signs in the home zone during the coming year.
