Local canoeing club Hammersmith Blades, set up with the help of Hammersmith & Fulham Council, took to the water on Saturday (May 15) in their first official outing. The new club, which only formed this year but already has 20 members, is looking to recruit canoeists of all ages and abilities. In an oarsome deal earlier this year, the council managed to secure an agreement so that London Youth Rowing Association (LYRA) and the local club will be able to use Dominion Housing-owned Queens Wharf as an extra base. The club runs out of Furnivall Sculling Club, but is expecting to start using Queens Wharf as well within the month. Andrew Christie, Director of Children's Services, said: “The link-up means that many more people, especially youngsters, will be able to take up sport in the borough, while at the same time enjoying the beautiful Thames.” Chair of the club Sambit Mohapatra, said: ‘’We have had a lot of interest from the taster sessions held towards the end of last year and expect to have over 60 new members by the end of the 2010.’’ For more information visit www.hammersmithblades.com or call the club on 07837 638414.
