The Bush Theatre management found itself torn in two directions on November 30th. While attending the 2005 Arts Council Meyer-Whitworth Award at the National Theatre, won by Steve Thompson for his debut play Damages, seen at The Bush in 2004, another Bush-produced first play, Mammals by Amelia Bullmore, was being honored in two categories at the Whatsonstage Theatregoers’ Choice Award nominations.
Mammals, which is going on an eight-week national tour from January 20th 2006, was nominated in the ‘Best New Comedy’ category and actress-turned-playwright Amelia Bullmore was also named as one of the contenders for the ‘Ms London Newcomer of the Year’. Mammals was also named as one of the top five plays of the year in Whatsonstage’s sister publication, Theatregoer.
Meanwhile, Steve Thompson was accepting his cheque for £8,000 in the ceremony at the National Theatre for this year’s Meyer-Whitworth Award for new writing for the theatre, during which he thanked the Bush particularly for “taking a chance on a fledgling playwright”.
