Andy Slaughter MP

Parliament gets down to serious business this week after the interruptions of the election, summer break and conferences. First up for debate is the Renters’ Rights Bill, of particular interest in Hammersmith where we have one of the most stressed rental markets in the country. The Bill fulfils the broken promise of the last government by ending arbitrary ‘no fault’ evictions and goes much further to protect renters by improving housing conditions, stopping discrimination and allowing challenges to rent increases.
My main task in the Commons will be stating the work of the Justice Select Committee of which I was just elected chair and starting to examine the many problems with our courts and prisons.
With other west London MPs I am working to bring local issues to the attention of ministers after their neglect by the outgoing government. We will be meeting the transport minister and deputy London mayor for transport to press for action on Hammersmith Bridge. A logistical solution and business plan has been sitting in Whitehall for 18 months waiting on government response and a realistic proposal for funding the rebuild.
We are also waiting for a review of the previous government’s hospital building programme. All three of our local hospitals – Hammersmith, Charing Cross and St Mary’s – are in dire need of major investment but were removed from the so called ‘new hospitals programme’ by the Sunak government. We have already met with Health Secretary Wes Streeting and I am encouraged both by the sense of urgency he has injected into the Department of Health and Social Care and by the advanced plans Imperial have prepared for rebuilding their estate.
