PC Well's gets more than he bargained for when out patrolling local streets
PC Dan Wells was not expecting to deliver a baby last night when he came to work for a night duty in Hammersmith & Fulham.
PC Wells, a response officer based in Hammersmith & Fulham, was on patrol at 03.30 yesterday morning, 9th October, as the radio operator of an emergency response vehicle, when his car was flagged down by a man in the Fulham Road.
PC Wells approached the man and his car, a BMW, and the man told him his wife was in labour - in the front seat was a woman in the last stages of labour.
He took her hand and reassured her. The baby (a girl) was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. PC Wells unravelled the cord and ensured she was breathing. The baby was then handed to PC Martin Warnes, who was also at the scene, wrapped in a coat and handed to her mother. Shortly afterwards the ambulance arrived and mother and baby were taken to hospital.
PC Dan Wells said, "I'm used to dealing with criminals, so it was a completely different experience for me to be faced with a woman in labour.
"It was an amazing experience and I am glad I was able to assist, but I think in future I will stick to catching criminals.
"I have visited Mum and baby in hospital and it is great to see they are both doing well."
