Ravenscourt Park charity event aims to raise £10,000 to help the visually impaired

Action Trust for the Blind is inviting West London residents and their friends to walk, jog, run, rollerblade or find another way of getting around Ravenscourt Park during its annual ‘Around the Park in 80 Ways’ fundraising event on Sunday 8 October 2006. The Hammersmith Grove-based charity is aiming to double last year’s target by raising £10,000 so that it can continue its ‘Volunteers for Visually Impaired People (VIPs)’ scheme and other vital initiatives to help people in the boroughs of Hammersmith, Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea who have sight problems.

Action Trust for the Blind is encouraging participants to be sponsored to complete all or any of the five 1km circuits around Ravenscourt Park. Hammersmith and Fulham Councillor Antony Lillis will open the event at 11am at the Paddenswick Road entrance to the park, by the Sensory Garden.

The charity’s ‘Volunteers for Visually Impaired People’ programme matches sighted volunteers with visually impaired local residents to offer vital help at home, such as managing their correspondence, reading from books and magazines, and shopping. Action Trust for the Blind also organises a weekly Luncheon Club for elderly visually impaired local residents and a monthly talking magazine called London Sounds.

Our Sunday morning walk in the park will be great fun and at the same time you can help make a difference to other people’s lives. So, adults bring your kids and dogs, kids bring your parents and dogs, and dogs bring your owners!”
