Fantasy world gets hospital doctor struck off
Local man found guilty of misconduct with Abi Titmuss
Hammersmith Doctor Shibley Rahman has been struck off the medical register after he was found guilty of stalking Abi Titmuss.
At a tribunal hearing, the General Medical Council heard that Dr Rahman was an alcoholic, suffered from depression and might have a psychological affective disorder and therefore concluded that he was not currently fit to practise "under any circumstances".
Dr Rahman first contacted Miss Titmuss in July 2004 after she appeared in several newspaper articles. Giving evidence at his hearing Rahman said he felt the coverage had been unfair and he wanted to offer her help and support.
He was accused of bombarding the former nurse with numerous emails and text messages and even following her into a communal shower block after turning up uninvited at her home. Dr Rahman stated that he wanted to get to know Miss Titmuss better and to support her in her work for charity the Teenage Cancer Trust.
The Cambridge-educated doctor was working as a senior house officer at the Royal Brompton Hospital. He admitted to living in a "fantasy world" and that he had hoped to form a "romantic" relationship with Miss Titmuss. He also told the fitness-to-practise panel, that has already appeared twice in court to plead guilty to assaulting his Bangladeshi wife with whom he has an arranged marriage.
He will be sentenced in court later this week.
