Curzon Cinemas has confirmed its plans to open in Hammersmith’s new Civic Campus by submitting an application for a Premises Licence.

Though it has long been expected that the arthouse cinema chain would move into the King Street site, the plans remained uncertain due to Curzon’s continuing financial troubles.

In November last year, these issues led to the chain being sold for just £3.9 million by the previous American owner, Cohen Realty Enterprises to Fortress Investment Group, another American group which also owns Majestic Wine.

Curzon, founded in 1934, operated cinemas in 16 locations including flagship picture houses in Soho and Mayfair, plus a film distribution company, Curzon Films and online streaming service Curzon Home Cinema.

In January this year, discussing the chain’s future plans, Curzon’s CEO Philip Knatchbull said: “We will almost certainly go ahead with the new cinema in Hammersmith”, adding that a final decision was expected in April or May.

Now the decision appears to be confirmed, with Curzon Cinemas submitting an application to Hammersmith & Fulham Council for a new Premises Licence. If granted, the new five screen cinema will be open seven days a week from 9am till 1am.

The application is currently open for public comments and can be seen on the council website using the reference 2025/00764/LAPR.

The new Curzon will replace the old Art Deco cinema which had been on the site at 207 King Street since 1936, but was demolished in 2017. It will be a crucial part of the Civic Campus, which is being created around the redeveloped Hammersmith Town Hall.

The campus, says H&F Council “ will become a 'go-to' destination, providing welcoming, comfortable, convenient and inclusive spaces for the community to work, learn and share ideas.

“ Panoramic roof gardens, public squares, restaurants and bars sit alongside a cinema while performance areas, gallery space and shops will create an iconic new community around Hammersmith's revitalised Grade II-listed art deco Town Hall.”

The licence application describes the proposed cinema as "under construction" with no opening date yet announced. However, as reported on this site in April, the delayed Civic Campus project, including the cinema, is finally nearer completion and could be fully open by the end of October.
