HSBC has confirmed the Hammersmith branch is on its latest list of planned closures.

The branch on King Street adjacent to the Lyric Theatre will shut on 26 July. The nearest remain branches will be in Fulham, Chiswick and Notting Hill.

It is one of 62 branches to be closed this year including another eight in London. Last year the banking group closed at 82 sites as part of its ‘transformation programme’.

It has justified the closures by saying that demand for over the counter service in branches is falling as more customers prefer to bank online.

It claims that fewer than half of its customers now actively use the branch network, with average footfall falling by more than 50% since 2017.

The closures mean the average distance a customer will have to travel to a branch to speak to a real person will be four miles.

Jenny Ross, the money editor at Which?, said, “There has been an alarming number of bank branch closures in recent years, and many consumers who rely on banks to access cash for everyday essentials and face-to-face services will be concerned about what these latest closures mean for them.”
