PRESS RELEASE – IMMEDIATE – WEDNESDAY 16TH MARCH 2011   LATYMER HEAD ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT   Peter Winter, Head of Latymer Upper School since 2002, has today announced that he will be standing down as Head in August 2012.    Peter joined Latymer in 1973 as a young modern languages teacher. He went on to be Head of Modern Languages at Magdalen College School, Oxford and subsequently Sevenoaks School, where he and his wife Adwoa ran the International Centre. He left to become Headmaster of King Edward’s School, Bath, where he introduced full co-education.  He returned to Latymer as Head in 2002, the year before girls joined the Lower School.  With the Year 7 intake in September 2010, Latymer became fully co-educational for the first time in its long history with an equal balance of girls and boys.    Speaking of his decision Peter Winter said:-   “I have hugely enjoyed my time at Latymer and I shall be very sorry to leave.  However, after ten years I feel it is time to stand down and I have today told the Governors that I will be leaving in August 2012.  I have been very lucky indeed to work with a first-rate staff and an excellent and supportive team of Governors.  I am enormously proud of what we have achieved at Latymer in recent years; it has talented and delightful pupils and first class teachers. The School has a tremendous future.    The move to co-education has been a great success and I am particularly pleased to have played a significant part in that.  I also take great pride in the fact that in September we will have more than 80 children in the School in receipt of full means tested scholarships; we are carrying on the tradition of our founder in providing education to able children, regardless of their parents’ means.  These are the things which make Latymer such a special place. My successor will have an enviable task, running one of the best schools in London.   James Graham, Chairman of Governors, paid tribute to Peter Winter, saying:  “Peter has, quite simply, been an outstanding Head and has done everything we asked of him and more.  We could not have asked for a better Head to realise the vision we had for Latymer which has now become a reality.   We are very sorry that he has decided to retire at the end of the next academic year but understand his decision.”       ENDS – FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT PETER WINTER ON 0845 638 5991
