England football legend Stuart Pearce has officially opened a new decorating and DIY store in Hammersmith.

Pearce, who represented England 78 times including nine times as captain, cut the ribbon as Leyland SDM opened the store at 137-139 King Street.

It is Leyland SDM’s 33rd store, all of which are based in London.

The former Nottingham Forest fullback mingled with customers and challenged them to a game of table football.

Pearce, also sometimes known as ‘Psycho’, said, “It was fantastic to be at the official opening. I was born and raised not far from this new Leyland SDM store in Shepherd’s Bush and I also started out as an electrician so I could relate to the customers.

“It was great fun to mingle with customers and have a game of table football. I’m sure this store will prove very popular with both tradespeople and home improvers.”

The store stocks a comprehensive range of products across all departments, including paint and decorating essentials, building materials, electrical fittings, tools, plumbing equipment, ironmongery and much more, all under one roof.

The opening celebrations also saw Leyland SDM unveiled as an official sponsor of Hammersmith & Fulham RFC - and there was a donation of £500 worth of materials to nearby Flora Gardens Primary School.

Leyland SDM has bucked the nationwide trend with eight new stores opened in the last two years – and more outlets planned during 2023.

Martin Hastings, CEO of Leyland SDM, said: “We’re delighted to have officially opened our new Hammersmith store, which follows months of planning and preparation.

“It was fantastic to have local hero Stuart Pearce along to cut the ribbon and meet our customers, who were thrilled to see such a well-loved character in-store.

“We’re also proud to be supporting the local community with donations to Hammersmith & Fulham RFC and Flora Gardens Primary School, both of which play a key role in the area.

“This store will offer both tradespeople and retail customers ultimate convenience when they are carrying out jobs in the local area. Everyone visiting can benefit from the expert DIY knowledge of our colleagues and first-class service, including express delivery if required.

“We have a growth strategy in place which will see us further enhance our presence across London. It’s great to get 2023 off to a positive start.”

The store is open from 6.30am to 7pm Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday. It also benefits from a loading bay.
