Local environmental group to hold birthday party
Hammersmith and Fulham Friends of the Earth are celebrating 25 years of campaigning with a party at the Riverside Studios, Hammersmith, on 14th November. Drinks and nibbles will start at 7.00 just before Roger Higman gives a speech about the group. They'll end the night with a Raffle with loads of great prizes. Attendance at the event is by invitation only.
The group was started in 1981 by Hammersmith & Fulham locals to make a difference on issues they were passionate about - the environment and looking after their local community.
In the past 25 years the group has gone from strength to strength working on a range of local and global issues from household recycling to aviation and climate change:
To help support the event, Friends of the Earth Senior Campaign Co-ordinator Roger Higman will be attending as guest speaker to discuss some of FoE's campaigns. Ruth Tigg, the group's founding member, will also be looking at some past achievements. Andrew Slaughter MP for Ealing and Shepherd's Bush will also be there.
Hammersmith and Fulham Friends of the Earth founding member, Ruth Tigg said, “Over the last twenty five years we have seen that the action of a few passionate individuals can gain government recognition and help stop further harm coming to the environment.”
Working with the local council the Hammersmith & Fulham group ran campaigns to raise awareness about recycling, in line with the Household Recycling Act of 2003. They campaigned for more household recycling and for more recycled products to be used, reducing unnecessary waste. The borough's recycling grew from 8% in 2002 to 12% by 2005.
Fair Trade was another success for the group and the Borough, winning them official Fair Trade status awarded by the Fair Trade Foundation in 2005. To mark the event a Fair Trade Day was held at Lyric Square. With a live music, free fair trade chocolate stalls and hundreds of postcards signed, the event called on the government to bring in a Company Reform Law Bill - the biggest shake up of UK Company Law for a decade.
Tony Juniper, Executive Director for Friends of the Earth commented about the group, "The Hammersmith and Fulham group have been central to our actions in West London. Their work in Recycling and Fairtrade has been superb for the borough not to mention the work they've done for the Big Ask campaign against Climate Change. I hope that the party encourages more residents to take an active interest in their environment."
