Hammersmith & Fulham Council has opened a consultation on a proposal to introduce a series of raingardens and new planted areas along Blythe Road in W14. The scheme is intended to reduce surface‑water flooding, increase greenery on the street, and improve pedestrian safety at two busy junctions, while maintaining all existing parking spaces.
The council’s plan focuses on the stretch of Blythe Road between Masbro Road and Girdlers Road. It includes the installation of raingardens at the corners of the junctions with Aynhoe Road and Girdlers Road, where the carriageway would be reshaped to create a larger and more visible pedestrian crossing area. The council says this change would make it easier for drivers to see people waiting to cross and would create a more comfortable space for pedestrians.
Additional green spaces would be added on the footway outside Walpole Court, Boswell Court, and Coleridge Court on both Ceylon Road and Faroe Road. The proposal also includes new gravel tree pits outside the Coleridge Court shops and Calcott Court. According to the council, these interventions would introduce more planting to a street that is currently dominated by hard surfaces, while preserving accessibility for all users.
Raingardens are designed to collect and absorb rainwater, allowing it to soak naturally into the ground rather than flowing directly into the sewer system. The council argues that this approach can help reduce the risk of localised flooding during heavy rainfall, particularly in areas served by older drainage infrastructure. It also says the new planting would create a greener buffer between the pavement and the road, improving the overall experience for people walking along Blythe Road.

The project is being funded through the H&F Green Investment scheme, which allows residents to invest from as little as £5 and receive fixed returns while supporting environmental improvements in the borough. The council describes the scheme as a way for local people to contribute directly to climate‑resilience projects such as this one.
The consultation is open until midnight on 6 April 2026, and the council is encouraging residents to share their views through its online survey. Anyone who needs help accessing the survey or the associated plans can contact the Healthy Streets team at Healthystreetsprojects@lbhf.gov.uk.
