Filming for ITVs ‘The Sweeney’ began in May 1974 and to celebrate 50 years of the iconic crime serious a tour is being held of the many local locations featured.
The show was filmed on 16mm film and made solely on locations to create a realistic feel.
The tour runs from Hammersmith to Notting Hill and starts from the iconic Colet Court building on Hammersmith Road where the interiors used by Euston Films between 1974 and 1978.
The gym at the building served as the Flying Squad’s base and the basement was where the cells were located. Colet Court was also used for classic Euston Films shows : "Minder", "Special Branch" and "Fox".
John Hughes remembers watching the first broadcast in January 1975 of the show, which at its peak reached 20 million viewers, and made household names out of John Thaw & Dennis Waterman who played Regan and Carter.
Guest stars included Diana Dors, Brian Blessed, Ian Hendry, Ray Winstone, Michael Eplhick and George Cole who later starred with Waterman in Minder.
He is hosting the tour which leaves from Colet Court at 2pm on Sunday 9 June.
He has already held two walks this year in March and May which helped raise money for the "John Thaw Charitable Trust".
Due to the high interest extra tours are also running on Sunday 14 July and 11 August 11th both at 2pm.
