Historic Westcroft Square Given a Green Flag

Award confirms high standard of care and maintenance

Westcroft Square, an open space in a residential area of Hammersmith just north of King Street has been award a Green Flag.

These are given out by the Keep Britain Tidy Green campaign to recognise high standards of care and maintenance.

Built around 1878, Westcroft Square was created during the reign of Queen Victoria and is within a Conservation area near to the junction with Goldhawk Road. The green space’s canopy includes trees over 50 years old. There are also bird boxes and spring bulbs.

It received a mini-makeover in 2020 when the pavement was replaced with an environmentally kinder permeable gravel path used in the Royal parks.

Westcroft Square is very popular with residents, such as Bridget, a member of the Westcroft Square Residents’ Association who says, “It’s great news that our garden has achieved Green Flag status. It’s such a treasure, to enjoy the plants and trees throughout the seasons - to meet with neighbours, the resident cats, and listen to the birds sing. It promotes a healthy community.”

It is the latest green space in Hammersmith & Fulham to receive the prestigious Flag award and the borough now has 20 parks and green spaces with the award, the highest ever.

Cllr Sharon Holder, H&F Cabinet Member for the Public Realm, says, “The new award for Westcroft Square means that almost half of the parks and green spaces in H&F have Green Flag status.

“It reflects our commitment to improve and maintain local parks and green spaces as we aim to make H&F the greenest borough in Britain.”
