December figures show decline of almost all type of crimes

Crime levels in Hammersmith and Fulham is at its lowest level in a year, according to the Met's latest figures. In December 2003, there were a total of 2,087 offences, 7% less than the number registered in December 2002. There were less violence, sexual offences, robberies and thefts this Christmas. There were even a 3.5% reduction in burglaries compared with December 2002 after an awareness campaign conducted by the Police (see Burglary increases over Christmas).

There was less violence against the person, which includes murders, assaults and harassment, compared with December 2002 and this type of crime is at its lowest levels in the year. Also in decline, thefts still represents half of the total crimes committed locally and cars are the targets.

One of the greatest declines (27%) was for robberies, from a total 116 in December 2002 to 84 last Christmas. But for sexual violence, despite the reduction indicated last month, figures showed a tendency of increase during last year, especially in the number of rapes.
