Improvement works are set to begin on King Street in Hammersmith on Monday 20 October, with the aim of enhancing pedestrian and cyclist access to the area surrounding the Civic Campus. The project, which is expected to last six weeks, will involve widening the pavement between Cromwell Avenue and Unity Square, the new public space adjacent to the refurbished Town Hall. New cycle lane markings will also be introduced as part of the changes.

The works are being funded by the developer and were initiated in response to requests from local residents seeking a safer and more welcoming environment along King Street. During the construction period, a short section of the pavement and cycle lane will be temporarily closed, although the road will remain open to motorists. Pedestrians will be directed to use the opposite pavement, while diversion routes will be clearly marked for cyclists.

Westbound cyclists will be guided to merge safely into traffic before rejoining the cycle lane after approximately 160 metres. Eastbound cyclists will be diverted via Studland Street, Glenthorne Road, and Leamore Street before returning to King Street. An alternative route for cargo bikes will follow Rivercourt Road and the shared pavement next to the A4, rejoining King Street via Bridge Avenue.

The pavement improvements form part of the wider Civic Campus redevelopment, which aims to revitalise the western end of King Street. The new Civic Campus is intended to provide a mix of public amenities including roof gardens, squares, restaurants, bars, a cinema, performance spaces, gallery areas, and shops. These facilities will be located around the Grade II-listed art deco Town Hall and are designed to support community engagement and economic activity.

Councillor Stephen Cowan, Leader of Hammersmith & Fulham Council, described the Civic Campus as “a beautiful, environmentally positive and accessible new quarter where people can live, work, play and relax.” The development is positioned as a central destination for arts, culture, business, and community life in the borough.
