Falling satisfaction with street cleaning Cllr Greg Hands has hit out at Labour-run Hammersmith & Fulham Council this week, following the publication of figures that show only 44 per cent of local residents are satisfied with street cleanliness in the borough. The figures, published in the Council's "Best Value Performance Plan", show that the 44 per cent statistic also marks a fall in satisfaction from 50 per cent in the year 2000, the last time the survey was carried out. Cllr Hands has been inundated with complaints about the state of the streets in the borough, including from Redan Street resident and former Foreign Secretary, Lord (Douglas) Hurd. |

Ellis, Rosedew Road's resident, wrote to HammersmithToday.co.uk
about dumping on site of demolished petrol station, junction of
Rosedew Road with Fulham Palace Road. He reported that the fences
have been broken down and huge quantities of earth and rubble are
being dumped during darkness on the site, which is adjacent to the
Crabtree Conservation Area. Ron Ellis says: "The area is now nearly full and spilling on to the pavement. It is a disgusting mess." The council's Smarter Borough plan targets the issues that the council knows annoy residents most, including graffiti, abandoned cars, fly-tipping and litter. The council rely on local people to know where the borough's worst litter, graffiti and fly-tipping hotspots are and to report those illegally dumping waste. One local resident,
Richard Jelley of Bowerdean Street has said: "The state of
the LBHF streets is a disgrace to the borough and to London. I
sometimes wonder if they are swept at all, and of course at this
time of year the brimming builders' skips and summer litter make
it all the more dismal."
Cllr Hands has added: "For the exorbitant amount of Council Tax paid by each and every Hammersmith & Fulham resident, it is shameful that the street cleaning service is so derisory. "It was poor in the year 2000 when only half of residents were satisfied with street cleanliness, for this figure to have gone down is simply unacceptable. "The 'wastehelp@lbhf.gov.uk' helpline is never replied to and street sweepers are rarely seen. It is no wonder the rubbish is piling up. "Local residents deserve better - after all, a clean street isn't that much to ask for, is it?" |
