£60 fine for polluter cars

Drivers will be stopped randomly for emissions testing. 1 in 5 cars would fail the test.

A uniformed police officer will stop vehicles at the roadside and a qualified vehicle tester will test their emissions levels. The test only takes a couple of minutes. If the vehicle is found to exceed the emission limits by more than 10%, there is a £60 fine. This can be reduced to £30 if the vehicle is corrected within 14 days.

Random Testing will occur from July throughout the year in the following boroughs: Barking and Dagenham, Barnet, Bexley, Brent, Camden, City of London, Croydon, Ealing, Enfield, Greenwich, Hackney, Hammersmith & Fulham, Haringey, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Islington, Kensington & Chelsea, Lambeth, Lewisham, Merton, Newham, Richmond, Southwark, Sutton, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Wandsworth and Westminster.

Any vehicle driving within the 28 boroughs participating in the scheme could be tested. According to ALG, 1 in 5 cars in London would fail the emissions test, especially those older or badly maintained vehicles.

Emissions from vehicle exhausts are a significant cause of this pollution and 1,600 people die prematurely in London every year as a result of breathing London's polluted air.
