Historic Hammersmith Treasure Hunt

Local fun for all the family on Saturday 17th May

Historic Hammersmith is the venue for the borough’s second Treasure Hunt on Saturday 17th May 2008.

Created by the Hammersmith and Fulham Historic Buildings Group (HBG), this fun-filled family event will get old and young alike scurrying round Hammersmith against the clock to find the most answers to questions based around local history and heritage. With a series of exciting prizes to be won, the day promises to be great fun as well as educational.

John Goodier, who devised the route, explained: ‘The clues range from the obvious to the obscure. No prior knowledge of the area is required. Getting the right answer involves keeping your eyes open, looking up as well as down and solving the puzzles set.’

Angela Dixon, Chairman of the HBG said, ‘It should be a fun day out for all ages and we hope people will enjoy finding out more about this historic area at the centre of the borough. The proceeds will help us continue our vital work of looking after our borough’s historic buildings and open spaces which are constantly under threat.’

Dr Andy Duncan, local historian and author commented: ‘Hammersmith, including Bradmore House, St Paul’s Church and the Malls (Upper and Lower) is, after old Fulham, the most historic part of our borough . People will learn a lot about the area through doing the Treasure Hunt, and I bet that even people who live locally or think they already know the area well will have their eyes opened to things they've never noticed before.’

The Hunt starts and finishes at the Plough and Harrow, 122-124 King Street. Entry forms with full details of the route and all the clues will be available there between 10am and 3pm. The circuit tales about 2 hours and completed forms must be returned to the Plough and Harrow by 5pm.

The entrance fee is £10 per team (up to 4 adults plus children) or £7 in advance. To obtain your advance ticket, please send a cheque for £7 (made payable to the Hammersmith & Fulham Historic Buildings Group) to the HBG Treasurer, Jo Brock, Flat 12, 43 Peterborough Road, SW6 3BT. Please include an SAE for sending you your ticket.
