The Cork Yarn-Spinners
Throughout March 2007 the Irish Centre will be presenting some major and exciting Literary events. On Friday March 9th the brilliant Cork Yarn-Spinners will be coming over from the West of Ireland to appear at Around The Fire-Side Irish Storytelling club; hosted by the Irish Centre’s Storyteller in Residence Kate Corkery they will present an evening of stories, tales and old Irish yarns. (Entry £4 Starts 8pm)
The Irish Book Fair
On Saturday March the 10th the Irish Centre’s Annual Irish Book Fair will be taking place, which features a large sale of Irish books, along with talks and readings by top Irish writers.
This years programme includes appearances from the author (and well known TV presenter,) Fergal Keane. Writer Don Mullan will read from his book ‘Gordan Banks A Hero Who Could Fly;’ (his previous book ‘Eyewitness-Bloody Sunday’ was made into the Granada Screenplay.’) Hot of the press from ‘Hodder Headline,’ comes the powerful new Irish writer John Rogers. Recently featured on Radio 4, John will read from his debut novel ‘For The Love of My Mother.’ Aspiring playwright, novelist and short-story writer Janet Behan (Brendan Behan’s niece and daughter of Brian Behan) will read from her short stories and talk about her Irish Literary family. Niall McDeviitt, the Irish Centre’s Poet in Residence, will be gathering once again with a great clan of Irish Bards to bring you an Irish poetry show; The Irish poet Eddie Linden will also be appearing and John Waller will be reading from his Uncles biography, ‘Irish Flames The Arrival of the Black and Tans’..
As a special extra this years event will also feature an Irish Literary Walk around Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush, which will visit places where W.B. Yeats and Sean O Casey lived, as well as former haunts of George B. Shaw. The walk will be led by Niall McDavitt. ( £3. starts 10.45am for more information tel 020 8563 8232)
The Irish Book Fair 2007 will be open from 10am -5pm and entry to all of the readings and talks throughout the day will be Free;
The Rare Oul Times
Later in March (Saturday 25th) there will be another special literary event when the Irish theatre company Nomadic Theatre present their magical Irish play The Rare Oul Times, about the two notorious Dublin drinkers and literary figures, Brendan Behan and Patrick Kavanagh. Nostalgia humour and song flow in equal proportions to the pints of the black stuff, in this unforgettable piece of theatre which returns to the Irish Centre by public demand. (Saturday March 24th 8pm)
