A new take on a classic fairy tale for their festive show
From the creators of Phillip Pullman’s The Firework-Maker’s Daughter and Aladdin, and most recently Casanova, the Lyric once again joins forces with Told by an Idiot to bring a new version of one of the world’s greatest fairytales for a Christmas show directed by Paul Hunter.
Beauty and the Beast is inspired by Jean Cocteau’s masterpiece La Belle et la Bete and influenced by the worlds of Jaques Tati and Hergé, this timeless tale of love, adventure and enchantment is given a typically Told by an Idiot twist.
Fusing live music and physicality, Paul Hunter and co-writer Carl Grose from Kneehigh embrace the anarchic and eccentric elements of pantomime to create a contemporary piece of theatre for all the family. A mix of eras and forms collide, from Beauty’s 1950s bright, brash cartoon like world, to the Beast’s strange, de Chirico inspired 17th century castle.
The cast so far includes the Lisa Hammond (Improbable, Peter Kay’s Channel 4 Max and Paddy’s Road to Nowhere, BBC 2’s drama North Face) who stars in the title role and is joined by multi-award winning Hayley Carmichael (co-Artistic Director of Told by an Idiot, TMA Best Actress Award and Time Out Best Actress Award), Javier Marzan (Peepolykus), Nick Haverson (Improbable, Complicite) and Darmesh Patel (Improbable).
