of an additional £500,000 into two local services earmarked
for redevelopment or closure. Following on from discussions with local residents, the council has decided to spend £500,000 on the proposals for Janet Adegoke leisure centre and the Brook Green day nursery. The extra money for the services in the short-term will allow the council to support the community as changes to them are introduced. The extra money for Brook Green day nursery will allow the centre to stay open longer than planned, if this is necessary, to allow children to make a smooth transition into new nursery centres. The formal closure date is extended to 30 April 2003 but children without a permanent place will be able to stay on for part or all of the summer term. At Janet Adegoke, the reinvestment will be used to create a permanent gym and sports hall facility at Phoenix High School and additional transport services to Fulham Pools while the site is redeveloped. Again the main centre will remain open until the end of April. Council Leader, Cllr Andrew Slaughter said: "The injection of this additional £500k in both Brook Green nursery and the Janet Adegoke centre will allow us to provide the benefit of new and improved services in the future, while removing some of the short-term impacts on the community. "The new Janet Adegoke centre and regeneration of White City will provide significant improvements for the area and the new places for Brook Green children will be of equal or a superior quality." The additional monies will add about 1% to the Council Tax for 2003-04. Councillor Slaughter added, "The Council always has to balance the interests of taxpayers and service users. Given our tax increase will be amongst the lowest in London I believe this extra rise is defensible". |
