Bhavan Centre’s gallery hosts showcase of local talent for Festival 2005

Local artists have joined forces for a showcase of their work at the Bhavan Centre’s art gallery as part of the Hammersmith & Fulham Festival 2005. The Borough Open Exhibition runs until Sunday, 24 April. Opening hours are Mon-Fri, 11am-7pm; Sat and Sun, 11am-6pm

Professional, student and amateur artists are taking part in the annual Borough Open Exhibition, organised by the council’s arts team and held as part of the festival for the first time this year.

Anyone who lives, works or studies in Hammersmith & Fulham has been given the chance to have their artwork included in the show, hosted at The MP Birla Millennium Art Gallery at the Bhavan Centre, in Castletown Road, West Kensington.

Abi Isherwood, curator of The MP Birla Millennium Art Gallery, said: “This is the second year we have hosted the Borough Open Exhibition. Following the success of last year’s show, we are very happy to be giving local artists and residents the chance to see their work in a professional gallery space and we hope as many people as possible will come and enjoy the exhibition.”

Among the highlights of this year’s Borough Open Exhibition - comprising 75 artworks, including paintings, collages, drawings, prints and sculptures - are a sculpture, by Marianne Moore, made from hundreds of safety pins linked together; abstract Jackson Pollock-style paintings by visually-impaired artist David Townley; a pair of floral collages, comprising 25 pressed red roses and 63 rose petals in a grid format by Jessie Harcourt-Cooze; bronze still life sculptures by Aleksandra Aleksejevas and sculptures by students from Hammersmith & West London College.

The borough’s mayor, Cllr Charlie Treloggan, who officially launched the Borough Open Exhibition at the Bhavan Centre yesterday (Thursday), said: “This is an excellent opportunity for aspiring and established artists to show their work. The variety and quality of artwork on display is a tribute to the creativity of residents and the excellent visual arts work which takes place in local colleges. Our aim is to provide a platform for working artists and to encourage the development of new talent. We are very grateful that the Bhavan has provided this wonderful venue.”
