Calls will be diverted to alternative operations centres. Emergency cover The Ministry of Defence is organising emergency cover. It will use 827 ‘Green Goddess’ fire engines, manned by around 10,000 members of the armed forces. The MOD will not be able to replicate the current firefighting capability, but will aim to minimise the danger to human life. There will also be 331 specialist breathing apparatus rescue teams and 59 rescue equipment support teams with another 2,500 staff. With about 6,500 administrative, security and command and control staff this makes a total of around 19,000 service personnel providing emergency cover. Transport The government hopes that widespread disruption to transport systems can be avoided. London Underground has examined the likely effects of the strike, and is satisfied that trains can continue to run without safety being compromised. The following deep-level tube stations would close in the event of a London-wide strike by fire fighters: Belsize Park, Borough, Caledonian Road, Covent Garden, Edgware Road (Bakerloo Line), Elephant & Castle, Gloucester Road, Goodge Street, Hampstead, Holland Park, Kennington, Lambeth North, Lancaster Gate, Mornington Crescent, Queensway, Regent’s Park, Russell Square, Tufnell Park and Wapping. Public events A strike should not cause sporting events to stop or cinemas to close, according to the Health and Safety Executive. Bonfire night will not be cancelled. |
