Want to do something for the environment?

Friends of the Earth has launched a free monthly update with all you need to know

Ever feel like you want to do something for the environment but are just too busy or not sure where to start? Now you can find out about key local issues and help save the planet with minimum effort and expense. Hammersmith and Fulham Friends of the Earth's have just launched a free new email monthly update. The email includes key news, current email and letter writing actions and local environmental events. The email update is open to anyone who is interested in making a positive difference to their environment. You can enrol for the update from the Hammersmith and Fulham Friends of the Earth website.

Recent local actions
After much campaigning by Friends of the Earth on Friday 11th July 2003, the Household Waste Recycling Bill went through the report stage and third reading in the House of Commons. The Doorstep Recycling Bill itself requires that by 2010 every household in England must have at least two types of recyclable waste collected from their home.

After campaigning by Hammersmith and Fulham Friends of the Earth and other London Friends of the Earth groups Ken Livingstone has expressed support for the GM-Free London initiative. The London biodiversity plan states that "The Mayor will oppose commercial or experimental release of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) into the environment in London". In addition the GLA catering contracts insist on organically certified produce.

Thanks to campaigning by Hammersmith and Fulham Friends of the Earth a new pedestrian crossing is about to make crossing the 4 lane highway that is Goldhawk Road - less of a life-threatening lottery. The new crossing will enable local residents to walk easily to Hammersmith - through Brackenbury HomeZone , and for children going to Brackenbury school at last there is a safer route! Two children have previously been injured on Goldhawk Road, but with a new Puffin crossing, Goldhawk Road will be a safer, nicer and more relaxing place to shop, eat and walk along.

Paula White, Campaigns co-ordinator for Hammersmith and Fulham Friends of the Earth said:-
"Not everyone wants to attend meetings or go on marches but that doesn't mean they don't care about the environment. We are trying to provide lots of different ways for people to become involved in our work to suit different peoples needs and interests. The email update is just one option and it provides the most value for the least effort. The free email newsletter has quick and simple actions that you can take which will ultimately make a big difference to the environment you live in. So if you do just one thing to support us then this would be a good choice"

Areas that the group are currently campaigning for are against the new incinerator in Belvedere which could burn Hammersmith's waste, improved air quality in the borough, improvements in recycling for all (Currently the kerbside recycling scheme excludes certain residents) and for further GM Free catering and services to be provided by the council.
