Hear Fulham Symphony Orchestra Play at Hammersmith Town Hall

Exploring Russian orchestral works as part of 60th anniversary celebrations

Fulham Symphony Orchestra in action

Fulham Symphony Orchestra will explore Russian orchestral works at Hammersmith Town Hall on Saturday 30 March.

Part of a series of concerts celebrating the orchestra’s 60th anniversary year, it will feature Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4 and the UK premiere of Galina Ustvolskaya’s Poem No. 2.

"Shostakovich’s dazzling Fourth Symphony was withdrawn due to Soviet censure before its scheduled 1936 premiere," said Sharon Robinson, chair of Fulham Symphony Orchestra.

"The symphony, scored for an enormous orchestra of over 100 musicians, wasn’t heard publicly until almost 30 years later."

She added that while Galina Ustvolskaya was a pupil of Shostakovich, she developed her own distinctive compositional style.

As part of their 60th anniversary celebrations, the orchestra are also aiming to put on an exhibition of past programmes and other FSO memorabilia for viewing at the concert.

Fulham Symphony Orchestra  say they welcome new players of around Grade 8 standard or above and add that current players range from amateurs playing at a professional standard, to those who have taken up their instrument again after a few years off. If in doubt, get in touch!

The orchestra currently have vacancies for:

contrabassoon
double basses
horns
violas
violins

They maintain a waiting list for other instruments.

If you’re interested in joining us, you can contact the orchestra on their website or email membership@fso.org.uk.

New members of the orchestra join us on a trial basis, with membership confirmed on completion of a successful first term.

Rehearsals are in Hammersmith, usually at the Novotel London West close to Hammersmith Broadway, on Monday evenings for nine weeks before each concert (except for bank holidays when we rehearse on Tuesdays). The rehearsal schedule normally includes sectional rehearsals with coaching from well-established tutors.
