The
borough's most green fingered residents were recognised this week
as the annual gardening awards were presented at a Town Hall reception.
Winners
were announced in a range of categories including private, community
and business gardens, as well as prizes for windowboxes and
balconies. Awards were also made for 2nd and 3rd places and
certificates awarded for 'highly commended' and 'commended'.
The
highlight of the evening was the presentation of a cup to Mr.
Alec Cottrell for his gardening achievements. Alec, aged ninety
two, has been entering the borough garden competition for over
50 years! He shared many old photographs and memories with everyone.
Alec,
who won 3rd place for his front garden, said: "My wife
and I first won the cup in Coronation year fifty years ago when
we moved to Shepherds Bush from Fulham and have entered every
year since. The garden features York paving salvaged from the
streets of Fulham during the war. I have always got a great
deal of pleasure from gardening and my favourite flowers are
Dahlias and sweetpea."
Mayor
Charlie Treloggan said: "The standard of entrants was,
as ever, extremely high and it is a pleasure to make these awards
to residents who do so much to improve the appearance of the
borough."
The
Garden competition is an annual event, judged in June. If you
