Work begun on Burlington Danes

295 units of accommodation will be built for Hammersmith Hospital's staff .

Work has begun on the construction of 295 units of staff accommodation on the former Burlington Danes school site, next to Hammersmith Hospital on Du Cane Road.

The units, being built by Thames Valley Housing, will be let to Trust staff at considerably below open market rents. The scheme will assist the Trust in the recruitment and retention of staff by providing them with good quality, affordable housing near their place of work.

The land was acquired by the Trustees of the Charitable Fund for Charing Cross, Hammersmith and Queen Charlotte's Hospital five years ago, and the start of the works marks the beginning of the fruition of their aim to see staff accommodation, a nursery and a medical research facility on site.

The development will involve the construction of high-specification accommodation to cutting edge design principles. Among the features will be en-suite bathrooms, mini-kitchens, and combined telephone and IT access points in all rooms. A crèche, shop, laundrette, visitors' accommodation and landscaped recreational area will also be built.

Derek Smith, Trust chief executive said, "This is a great opportunity for our staff to find good accommodation at a reasonable price. The key to developing our services is with our workforce. By recognising their needs we can improve the working lives of current staff as well as attracting new people to our Trust."
