The Hammersmith Society is holding its AGM
May 24, 2010 Churches, housing association developments, a library and a tube station have all made it to the shortlist for the Hammersmith Society's latest round of environment awards.
The annual prizes, which recognise new buildings or gardens which have enhanced the Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush neighbourhoods over the past year, are due to be announced on May 27.
The nominations include:
St Stephen's church hall in Coverdale Road, Shepherds Bush
the new Dennis Potter building at Burlington Danes Academy, in Wood Lane, Shepherds Bush
the Factory Quarter development in Larden Road, Shepherds Bush
two housing association developments at 731-761 Harrow Road and Uxbridge Road (opposite Coningham Road)
the restoration of St Paul's Church in Hammersmith Broadway
the new Shepherds Bush Library at Westfield, Shepherds Bush
the new Central line station in Shepherds Bush.
Society chairwoman Melanie Whitlock said: "The committee toured Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush and we were impressed that despite the economic downturn there were still interesting new buildings which had been built or finished in the last year."
But no round of Hammersmith Society awards would be complete without the infamous 'wooden spoon' category, highlighting some of the borough latest eyesores.
In the running for the dubious honour are the advertising hoardings at the western end of the Hammersmith Flyover and long-term dumping of site debris by contractors at the west end of Shepherds Bush Green.
The environment awards, which are now in their 21st year, have previously recognised landmark buildings including The Ark in Talgarth Road, Hammersmith, and smaller developments such as the Grove Neighbourhood Centre in Bradmore Park Road, Hammersmith, and the Maggie's Centre at Charing Cross Hospital in Fulham Palace Road.
The awards will be announced during the Hammersmith Society's AGM on May 27 at 7pm at the former Island Studios building at 22 St Peter's Square, Hammersmith.
