17 year old Juliet Segayi is looking for sponsors
A local air cadet, 17 year old Juliet Segayi from White City Estate, has succeeded in gaining a place on a once in a lifetime trip to East Africa. The expedition, a national joint cadet force venture between the Sea, Army and Air Cadets, will see the team of 40 cadets and staff climb Mount Kilimanjaro, undertake a 'Streetwise' community project and mount a safari. The trip is planned for July 2005, however, for Juliet the journey has already begun.
On a dull winter weekend, training for the expedition commenced at Royal Air Force Wittering, in Cambridgeshire, this was the first time JUliet had been reunited with the team of 40 since the national selection process in July.
'I've always wanted to go to Africa', said Juliet. 'The Joint Service Expedition has given me the chance, eventually I want to go to Borneo'.
The training weekend was crammed with workshops on visas, health, fitness and what the cadets can expect on the Mountain as well as physical assessments. Juliet along with her fellow cadets will plan their own routes and will have come to terms with the challenges they will face in Africa including the danger of being eaten by a lion while suffering from diarrhea.
On top of the daunting prospect of the expedition itself, the challenges abroad as well as the planning and preparation at home, Juliet will have to raise a total sum of £1500 to take part in the trip. Juliet has plans for fundraising and is currently looking for sponsors.
