Children at Larmenier and Sacred Heart Primary School raised £376 with an after-school cake sale to support Sister Brenda McCall's work in South Africa with children and adults who have HIV/Aids.

The pupils handed over the money to Sister Brenda when she visited the school, in Hammersmith, last week.

Sister Brenda, of the Sisters of Nazareth, based at Nazareth House, in Hammersmith Road, W6, is helping to run an HIV/Aids centre in Khayelitsha township on the outskirts of Cape Town.

The centre has a crèche for children aged from three months to seven years who have HIV/Aids; a hospice for ten adults and children with HIV/Aids and two small community homes for six orphaned children with HIV/Aids. The centre also provides drug treatment to combat the symptoms of
HIV/Aids and runs classes for children aged five to seven, helping to get them into local schools. It is run by the Sisters of Nazareth - Sister Brenda, a trained nurse, helped to set up the centre three years ago.

She said: "We need to raise money all the time as we don't get any funds from the government. The centre is sponsored by Nazareth House. We link up with local doctors and get drug treatment for the children and adults. It gives them a better quality of life and keeps other illnesses, such as TB and meningitis, at bay.

The money from the children's cake sale will go towards buying educational toys and school equipment, such as pencils and books."
