ACAVA, the Association for Cultural Advancement
Through Visual Art is inviting entries for an
exhibition on the theme "Leave to Remain", exploring
and representing the experience of being a refugee
and/or asylum seeker in the UK through contemporary
visual art.

The exhibition "Leave to Remain" will run as part of
Refugee Week, a week long event in June aimed at
showcasing the contribution the refugee community
makes to the cultural diversity of the UK. Refugee
Week is a nation-wide programme of arts, cultural and
educational events that celebrate cultural diversity
and promote understanding about the reasons why people seek sanctuary.

The exhibition is open to submission from artists
presently living in the UK, who are refugees, asylum
seekers or have experienced a similar situation.

Any questions should be e-mailed to
margareta@leavetoremain.org and if you would like to
join the mailing list please e-mail
join@leavetoremain.org

Margareta Kern, curator and organiser of the exhibition, said: "The title for the exhibition comes from my own
experience of being an asylum seeker. I feel that
?leave to remain? even though a term for a visa,
carries with it a poetic sense and describes well the
experience of suspension where one might be asked to
leave or to remain in the UK."

To be able to make this project a real success and to
reach its aim of broadening people's understanding of
experience of refugees as well as giving artists who
are refugees and/or asylum seekers wider
opportunities, it will need financial support. If you
would like to make a donation for the project please
post a cheque for any amount you would like to give
(any amount is good) and make it payable to ACAVA. On the back of the cheque please write LEAVE TO REMAIN (Please post your cheque to the familiar address of: ACAVA, LEAVE TO REMAIN, FAO MARGARETA KERN, 54 BLECHYNDEN ST, LONDON W10 6RJ)
