According to the 2001 Census,
Hammersmith & Fulham has the highest tube usage rates in
London and when the congestion charge is factored into the equation,
the strikes are leaving local people with very few options on
how to get to work.
Commenting on the strikes, Greg said: "This sort of action
must not be tolerated - the militant left wingers in the RMT
have effectively brought the Capital City of the world's fourth
largest economy to a standstill.
With hundreds of thousands of commuters being forced onto other
forms of transport, which has blocked the roads and caused chaos
on the buses, millions of pounds will have been lost and London
will have become the laughing stock of the developed world.
Locally in Hammersmith & Fulham, the strike has led to our
roads being yet more congested - with the strike on, pedestrians
are moving faster than buses on Fulham Palace Road and Shepherds
Bush Road.
The Mayor and the Government must take a firm stand, passing
legislation if necessary, to stop London's entire transport
infrastructure and economy from collapsing.
Sadly, I fear they will do nothing - but then again, that's
not surprising - they don't call him 'Red' Ken for nothing!"

Hands
meets Shadow Minister for Women

Local Conservative Parliamentary
Spokesman, Cllr Greg Hands, welcomed Eleanor Laing MP to Hammersmith
last Tuesday, where she spoke about her new role as Shadow Minister
for Women.
The Epping Forest MP highlighted the importance of introducing
policies that support women in balancing their life in the workplace
as well as their role as carers of children. In particular, Mrs
Laing spoke about encouraging greater flexibility in terms of
working hours.
The Shadow Minister also raised the important issue of the number
of grandparents who now look after children whilst their parents
are at work and the need for a framework to support them.
Commenting on the visit, Cllr Hands said: "It was a great
pleasure to have been able to welcome Eleanor Laing MP to Hammersmith
and I was very interested to hear about many of the ideas being
brought forward to support the difficult 21st century balancing
act of caring for children as well as earning a living."
