111% increase in operation cancellations
As if the local Primary Care Trust being £5 million in deficit, 96 beds put out of use and 2,000 operations postponed – official figures from the Department of Health have revealed that there has been a whopping 111% increase in operation cancellations across Hammersmith & Fulham hospitals.
Number of cancellations from July to September 2003 in the Hammersmith Hospitals area (being principally Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals) was 79, rising to a massive 167 in the period from July to September 2004, a 111% difference.
Commenting, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Hammersmith & Fulham, Cllr Greg Hands, said: “These new figures say it all – a 111% increase is not small, medium or large. It is massive – and utterly unacceptable.
“It is extremely distressing for patients when operations are cancelled, and a number of people affected in the last months have contacted me. We cannot keep leaving local people in the lurch like this.
“It is time this Government took a grip of healthcare – and started delivering for Hammersmith & Fulham patients. The tale of woe in our local NHS goes on and on.”
