NME CARLING AWARDS 2003
It is one of the biggest dates in the rock n'roll calendar. The awards ceremony will be at Po Na Na's in Hammersmith on February 13.
Once again it’s time for the biggest date in the rock n’ roll calendar – the NME Carling Awards. As voted by readers of the NME, these awards are the only ones that really count. February 13th marks the day that some of the biggest stars of the music scene will descend upon Po Na Na’s in Hammersmith to celebrate into the early hours of the morning.
But who’ll be the ones clutching onto the prized gongs and who’ll be left empty-handed at the end of the night? This year sees two of the biggest bands in the UK go head to head as Coldplay take on the mighty Oasis in three categories: Best UK Band, Carling Best Album and Artist Of The Year.
Alongside the British guitar giants, the New Rock Revolution heroes feature massively throughout the nominations. Australia’s finest rockers The Vines have the potential to walk away with six gongs including Best International Band, Best Live Band, Carling Best New Band and Carling Best Album and Single.
The Carling Best New Band award acts as a fantastic reminder of just how good the music scene was last year for emerging acts. With bands like The Coral, The Libertines, The Datsuns, Black Rebel Motorcycle and The Music all in the running, this category must be the toughest to call.
Making a surprise entry into the Best Single nominations is Pink’s ‘Get The Party Started’ which is up against The Vines ‘Get Free’, Doves ‘There Goes The Fear’, Coldplay’s ‘The Scientist’, Ash’s ‘Envy’ and Queens Of The Stone Age’s ‘No-one Knows’.
The Street’s ‘Original Pirate Material’ was one of the outstanding albums of the last 12 months and sits alongside The Vines’ ‘Highly Evolved’, Coldplay’s ‘A Rush Of Blood To The Head’, Oasis’ ‘Heathen Chemistry’, Queens Of The Stone Age’s ‘Songs For The Deaf’ and The Coral’s self-titled debut in the nominations for Carling Best Album.
The Best Solo Artist category is as eclectic as ever (Mike Skinner, Pink, Avril Lavigne, Ryan Adams, Eminem and Ms Dynamite) and the Best Live Band reads like a dream festival line-up (Oasis, Muse, The Datsuns, The Vines, The Polyphonic Spree, The Hives).
